Giuliani: I'm Considering 2008 Bid
NewsMax ^ | 10/2/05 | AP

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said Sunday he will contemplate next year whether to run for president in 2008.

"I will be considering it next year," Giuliani said during a visit to Denmark. But he added that playing with the idea of running for the Republican nomination for president did not mean he would actually do it.

"Sometime you warm up and get ready and you don't get in and pitch," he told reporters, in a baseball analogy.

Giuliani who was praised for his leadership following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center, thanked Danish firefighters who raised $8,400 in support for their New York colleagues.

"To us it was the only thing we could do, raise money and show our support," firefighter Jens Hjorth said.

Eight firefighters from the station raised the money by recording a CD with six songs called "The Skyline Changed." They sold 27,000 copies.

On Sunday, the band members handed over a copy of the CD to Giuliani, who in return gave them a New York Fire Department hat.

Giuliani was in Denmark to speak at a business leadership conference in the Danish capital on Monday.

In 2000, Giuliani ran for the U.S. Senate, but dropped out after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Every election at every point in American History is run on a unique set of issues.
The issues of 2008 will not be 2000,2004 or 1968.
If the issues are competence, law and order, charisma, fiscal responsibility and anti-terror Rudy may be the one.
On Conservatism on social issues, don't forget Rudy is one who withdrew funds from a major American Museum for hanging the "doo-doo Madonna".
Don't forget it is Rudy it is Rudy who has a 100% record of opposing all terrorism. He threw Arafat out of any and all NYC functions while The Arkansas Grifters had him over to the WH 20 times. He condemned Puerto Rican terrorists while The Arkansas Grifters embraced them, and pardoned them after they were convicted.

That was nothing more than political posturing on the part of Rudy Giuliani.

When he was mayor of New York, Giuliani maintained an official policy under which every city department was prohibited from cooperating with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service in turning over illegal aliens. When Congress responded to numerous instances of this kind of nonsense among city governments around the country by passing a law in 1997 against this kind of criminal activity among local government officials, Giuliani unsuccessfully sued the Federal government to have the law overturned. The Federal courts threw out his suit on the grounds that they were nothing more than an unlawful effort to flaunt Federal enforcement efforts against illegal aliens, and Giuliani responded by vowing to ignore the law.

If Mohammed Atta had been arrested by the New York City police on September 10th, 2001 for jumping a subway turnstile, he would have been back out on the street within a couple of hours even if the INS had on open warrant against him for overstaying his visa.

Now I want every one of you Giuliani sycophants out there to read what I've posted here and tell me how this kind of political opportunism and criminal behavior squares with the "tough-guy / law & order / former Federal prosecutor" image that everyone seems to have of this @sshole.

Then tell me how he is possibly going to get more than 35% of the popular vote in either a GOP primary or a general election when his opponent starts revealing this information in a well-orchestrated ad campaign.

See #242.

I think Rudy is just enjoying the national spotlight for a while. His tenure as a serious GOP candidate for 2008 is going to end long before 2007 comes to an end.

For those who are insisting that Rudy be pro-life in order to be the GOP nominee, consider:

He would appoint law and order judges, who tend to skew anti-abortion.

And Roe may not even be a factor for re-consideration in the Roberts Court. Especially is Bush fills the O'Connor seat AND the John Paul Stevens seat before '08.

Rudy will waltz through the southern primaries. He's got IOU's all over Dixie from the 02 and 04 election cycles, and will collect even more in the 06 cycle.

Do you think a Giuliani candidacy would be more palatable with a certifiably conservative Supreme Court to balance a moderate/liberal Executive?

No. Rudy Giuliani simply doesn't bring very much to the table. He's a big-city mayor cut from the mold of a liberal, Northeastern Republican -- the kind that has almost ZERO influence on a national level.

He was stable when it counted as far as I'm concerned.

When was that?

9-11, 9-12, 9-13, 9-14, 9-15.... and so on, and so on...

You care about a lot of crap I don't care about... what'll actually happen? Neither of us knows.

Bad example. The Republican Party never won a national election with Rockefeller on the ticket -- he was appointed vice president by Gerald Ford in 1974 when Ford became President after Nixon's resignation.

In fact, he didn't even run again on the GOP ticket in 1976. Bob Dole was Ford's running mate against Jimmy Carter.

I've long felt that Rudy's best chance would be if abortion was no longer a federal issue in 2008. I know that he is also anti-Second Amendment, but he knows better than to mess with it. Besides, Congress is hesitant to even take up gun control issues (AWB being the big exception) and the Supreme Court has shown no interest in it.

We need Rudy in 2008!

Hillary is talking like a moderate and Rudy is the only one good enough to run to her Left!

Kill all the babies!

But not with guns, you're not allowed to have those!

Unless you're gay, then you can do whoever you want!

mmmm .... sarcasm .....

You care about a lot of crap I don't care about . . .

I'm not telling you what I care about -- I'm telling you what voters care about.

If you think the millions of evangelical Christians who turned out for George W. Bush in 2004 would even walk across the street for Giuliani in 2008, you're dreaming.

One thing we agree on ... Illegal immigration and securing the borders will loom large in 2008. How each candidate answers this question will speak volumes. I expect Rudy's position to evolve significantly from that in the 90's. But of course ... I could be wrong.

Well, I know they're a temperamental bunch that loves to stomp feet and gnash teeth, but I think at their root, they're practical people that vote the options in front of them. Or we'll end up with a Democrat.... could go either way at this point.

Catholics, too.

George W. Bush beat "Catholic" Kerry among Catholics thanks to a concerted effort publicizing their respective stands on abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, etc.

Churchgoing Catholics voted strongly for Bush. You ask us to vote Giuliani and you're gonna get laughed out of town. Many will revert to voting Democrat, and many more will vote for a third option, any pro-life third option, or just stay home.

If Reps think social issues are going to win in 2008, they are wrong.

I believe that's what you (and the other Dem-parroting, pro-abort libertarians) said the last time around. Then they took that little poll and found out that being right on social issues paid off for the Republicans. Do you think people in the heartland have suddenly decided they don't care what God thinks anymore? Dream on!

You're right.

But here is the exception.

Except for political junkies- and Reagan the movie star- most Americans don't know the candidates until they gather political momentum. It's a catch 22, because to gather that political momentum you need to be somewhat attractive.

Everyone already knows Giuliani. His looks don't matter. He seems taller.

Success and celebrity is an aphrodisiac.

Hillary will be using the same formula on the other side. She will use it to crush any Republican candadate not in her league. And few are.

The Clintons are looking for Republicans to nominate a Bob Dole. Make their day. Or make that their eight years.

Millions who would laugh at the thought of voting Bush will vote Giuliani.

There is a thread that he would take NY. Easy. He will also take CA.

"Anybody but Hillary" will work about as well for us as "Anybody but Bush" worked for the Dems.

Didn't say anybody but Hillary; I said Giuliani.

High profile. Great national recognition. Strong of defense. Strong on the war. ELECTABLE.

Stay home if you want to folks. You'll prove your point at the expense of our national security.

Disagree or agree on this, I think the most important thing is that we remain the great friends we always have been.
