Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said Sunday he will contemplate next year whether to run for president in 2008.
"I will be considering it next year," Giuliani said during a visit to Denmark. But he added that playing with the idea of running for the Republican nomination for president did not mean he would actually do it.
"Sometime you warm up and get ready and you don't get in and pitch," he told reporters, in a baseball analogy.
Giuliani who was praised for his leadership following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center, thanked Danish firefighters who raised $8,400 in support for their New York colleagues.
"To us it was the only thing we could do, raise money and show our support," firefighter Jens Hjorth said.
Eight firefighters from the station raised the money by recording a CD with six songs called "The Skyline Changed." They sold 27,000 copies.
On Sunday, the band members handed over a copy of the CD to Giuliani, who in return gave them a New York Fire Department hat.
Giuliani was in Denmark to speak at a business leadership conference in the Danish capital on Monday.
In 2000, Giuliani ran for the U.S. Senate, but dropped out after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
tkathy ''nailed'' the issues that will regain prominence in 2008. The fringe of the party, the Falwells, Robertsons, Bob Jones and the other social zealots will simply have to plead their case to a mainstream leadership. Otherwise, we'll hand over the government to the Dems.
"Rudy Giuliani ain't running in 2008, since he would be unelectable on a national level even if he wholeheartedly supported every single plank of the GOP platform."
That's quite a definitive statement. I wish it were backed up by some facts, instead of what is your blatant wish. Before you respond, please note that I have not advanced Rudy as a candidate; said I would support him; or even argued for him--I have only been discussing his viability.
Thanks.
No, the new media won't buy it, but unfortunately some of the MSM will. Giuliani's primary elections strategy (like John McCain's) is to try and peel away some conservative voters to add to his expected support from moderate Repubs, some dems, and Independents.
A lot of it depends on who is running and how the campaign is run. I wasn't impressed really with either Bush or Dole. Yeah, Bush won twice. But both of his opponents were vulnerable. They should have been bigger wins.
As for the war on terror, a lot will depend on what happens in upcoming years. Borders, for example, could suddenly rise up to be a huge issue, if we have another Ground Zero.
Here's another possible issue: the gas tax, drilling, and enviro-wackos run amok. If gas doesn't go down, then it will be big. It's already affecting the Virginia campaign, because Caine wanted to raise the gas tax.
The Clintons will try to help someone like Guilianni either win the nomination or run third party. They want to sap and re-direct the energy of our base. Because our base is fervent about abortion. That's what drives them. They love innocent life. And without the base, we won't go anywhere. FRegards....
"There are millions upon millions of deeply devout Christians who are loyal Republican voters, but they simply won't vote for someone who supports abortion and sexual perversion."
Even worse, they won't help campaign. No signs. No bumper stickers. No word-of-mouth. Fewer contributions. We would lose without the base.
Sounds to me that the 'moderate' field will be crowded. That's actually good.
"Social issues have run their course and will have an ever decreasing effect on national politics and policy formation. The vast majority of the electorate has seen the devisive nature of the polarized social issues that have dominated the GOP's capture by the fanactics on the far right."
Are you kidding? Social issues are continuing to cause increased polarization. That's what's happening now. Some go to DU. Some go to FR. The debate is growing ever more shrill and will continue until one party falls.
Two big RINO'S, McCain and Giuliani. I could never support either one for president.
There is this theory about de-polarization floating around. I heard Gingrich talk about it. Newt seems to think that people are 'tired' of the partizan 'bickering'. That's why he got all chummy with Hillary recently. But seems to me, now that people have more choices of their news sources, it stands to reason that two great teams would rise up: one side for truth and one side opposed to truth. The side opposed to truth will get all shrill and nasty, and so will the side for truth. In the end, truth will win, but only after a knock-down, drag-out, hammer-and-tong fight.
How about this? Keyes/Moore 2008. =] We can only dream.
And the first round of that fight will be the confirmation hearings for the President's next Supreme Court nominee.
NONONONONO. No WAY. Gun control. NO WAY RUDI. NO WAY. If the Dems run someone like Richardson or Gov Warner Rudi will lose the conservative vote or at least a lot of it. Espically gunowners. No way will they vote for RUDI>
Yeah, if social issues are so 'unimportant' to people now, I guess it will be a quiet Sunday drive, huh? I suppose if social issues are getting low on the totem pole, that people will quit listening to talk radio.
Inadvertently, you wrote why he would win.
Above you referred to Giuliani as a Hero.
Why is he a hero? Did he run into a burning building to save a kid? Throw himself on a grenade?
None of that. He's a "hero" for his political accomplishments. For doing in NY what was said to be impossible. His leadership in times of trouble. For being cool and competent in a time of severe crises.
Ask yourself: as much as you may support them for their positions how many politicians would you ever call a hero for their accomplishments in office?
Sometime the times demand a heroic political figure.
HA HA HA good one....
Allen/Rudy would be a good ticket. Allen himself is going to be shown to be tolerant of abortion for adult women in the first 10 weeks. let's see what the single issue pro-life voters have to say about that.
And in other news Genralisimo Francisco Franco is still dead.
