From Staff Reports
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said.

The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department.

The explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State.

After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and made fans exit the stadium to the east.

"Boren initially said a police bomb squad detonated explosives found at the site of the blast."

Ive read that report. You're reading it one way, I'm reading it another. I'm reasonably certain I'm right about what it means, but you could be, too. When EOD guys detonate explosives, they do so to destroy something that they find suspicious. They also provide the explosives. IF the object they detonate the explosives on is an explosive device, they should (but don't always) get a secondary explosion. Hopefully, they'll get around to telling us what really happened, but I'm not holding my breath waiting, either.

That makes zero sense.

Why wouuld some attacker leave a knapsack just to blow up a bench?

No, Hinrichs was the bomber here, and he intended to either:

a) kill himself in a way that really got him noticed
b) take others with him and do a suicide plot
3) kill others and not himself.....putting bombs under the buses or something.....but his timing was off

We don't really know which one of these is right yet.

Disparity in media coverage in Lake George Boat accident and suicide bombing outside Oklahoma stadium.

1) Media Mentions of Joel Henry Hinrichs - Only two stories.

2) Media Mentions of lake george boat- 1,100 stories

Here is a post from an OU fan who posted this report on an OSU sports site. This person is not a kid, and I have always found his posts to be pretty level-headed, so I would put some credence in what he says. Everything that follows is what he wrote. Bolding is mine.

there is a story about it in the DO this morning....

I was at the game, it was really weird. Nobody in the stadium really knew what was happening.

It was nearing halftime and we all heard this really loud set of explosions, lasted anywhere from 5-10 seconds, which is pretty long when your talkin about explosions....

I could feel it, it kind of rocked the stadium. I knew it just wasnt me because everybody around me said they felt it too.

It created a very quiet buzz in the stadium, and lots of people were on their phones trying to find out what happened, and many people tried to leave but they locked down the stadium and couldnt leave. (I didnt try to leave, but at the time we didnt know it was a bomb).....

Sounded like something out of Iraq though, it was friggin loud.

I want to see some evidence that the kid was suicidal, and that he has explosives experience, before I buy into this.

I'm not trying to make it a major plot. I was agreeing with another poster about a gut reaction. True or false, just a gut reaction.

"I tracked down which Frat he was in and tracked down the head of that Frat at OU and gave him a call and asked him if Joel was a Muslim convert. He said no he was definately not, not at all. So looks like we jumped to a conclusion."

Can a person ALWAYS know weather one is a convert to Muslim? There may be a reason to keep that quiet. Besides he may have not converted, but he could be a sympathizer.

But no matter what really occurred, it can safely be reported as a suicide, right?

Unless there was a note, not completely safe to assume that the body belonged to someone who intended to be around when the bomb went off. Not all bombers are suicide bombers, not even all of those promised 72 virgins.

---OKLAHOMA CITY -- A University of Oklahoma student accused of bringing an explosive device to an airport pleaded guilty in federal court to a misdemeanor charge.

24-year-old Charles Alfred Dreyling Junior faces up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine in the case.
Federal sentencing guidelines could recommend a prison term of as little as four months, but Dreyling could also be eligible for probation.
Dreyling was arrested in August at Will Rogers World Airport. Security personnel noticed a suspicious object in his carryon bag.
Court papers indicate Dreyling later told FBI agents the device, a modified carbon dioxide cartridge filled with gunpowder, was "basically a pipe bomb." He told authorities he had forgotten it was in his bag.---

What's up with these Oklahoma boys? Just good clean American fun gone bad or something more?

That's kind of at variance with PhiKapMom's post, if I understood her correctly; she was there, also, but it's also within reasonable bounds of differences in location, etc. Could be, could be not. With all the buildings around there, could also be echoes. Or maybe not, too.

PhiKapMom, How does thish compare to your experience?

This one sounds like the guy is weird; maybe he did have the personality of a person who kills himself.

However, the first one you posted sounded like there may have been another entity sending ammo to his dorm address.

He could be anti-war. He could be pro-PETA. He could hate jocks. There are many reasons fanatics do fanatical things.

You are blocking it with your firewall or something. It opens easily for me. Try holding your CTRL key down when opening and see if it works. It is a .php page...are you blocking those?
