From Staff Reports
NORMAN -- An explosion near the University of Oklahoma's Gaylord Family-Memorial Stadium killed one person Saturday, OU officials said.

The explosion happened at the courtyard near the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botany-Microbiology Building on OU's campus, which is west of the stadium, according to Sgt. Gary Robinson of the University police department.

The explosion happened during the second quarter of Oklahoma's game against Kansas State.

After the explosion, police set up a perimeter of several blocks and made fans exit the stadium to the east.

The image would be better if everyone was uriniating on the head.

Same here.

I won a nice bet.

My friend didn't think much of Oklahoma's chances of putting together a full game.

After the UCLA disaster OU looked like they started to grow up and come together.

Bomar looks very athletic and reminds me of a winner at all costs to physical health.

I wonder how Peterson will hold up under the repeated strain of carrying the ball.

I have total respect for Pres Boren and his wife and how much they have given to OU and this State.

Did you know that in the last election in 2004 that Pres Boren endorsed my Republican State Rep, another Republican State Rep, and my State Senator for reelection as being friendly to OU? He may be a Democrat but he is sure my favorite Democrat. He is also a good friend to the Bush Family and a foreign policy advisor to the President.

Thanks.

A packed stadium is a very juicy terror target because of the potential of the enormous casualty-multiplier of deliberately inducing a mass panic stampede.

Set off multiple bombs in a packed stadium over a few minutes (especially in the upper decks) and thousands might die, pushed over the broken railings in a panic-driven human avalanche.

That's how I began my novel, but without suicide bombers. Instead, a sniper fired into the upper deck 90 times to induce the panic stampede.

I think even broken bottles of bleach, and screams of "POISON GAS!!!!" could turn a packed stadium into a scene of mass death, with folks piled up in the exit tunnels.

While trustworthy, perhaps she's trusting in rumours that she has heard (about the 2nd bomb being detonated). Actually, she even acknowledges that she's going by "what she heard from others". Kind of like people "hearing" that people were resorting to cannabalism in New Orleans. It's easy to get caught up in something when you're as close to it as she has been. I appreciate her info, but am taking the "2nd bomb being detonated by the bomb squad" with a grain of salt until there is another source.

Now that you mention it, that second explosion could be part of the first charge that got shielded by the dude's body and didn't 'cook off' the first time......

It'll be interesting to watch the story evolve, but just from a "choice of weapon to commit suicide with" standpoint it's pretty suspicious. This isn't just some guy who swallowed a couple of bottle rockets then inhaled a fuse.

Thanks!

I almost freaked when I got to my son's fraternity and heard them talking. The side of the face of his fraternity brother was still red -- that's how close he was. He said at the time all he could think to do was run and then wondered if someone thought he was involved so he called the cops to report what he had seen and they showed up as my daughter and I were leaving.

I think the SI.com story I posted earlier mentioned suicide bomber in the sub heading. See the story at posting: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1495058/posts?page=784#784

Total of 3 "potential" suspects? Or 4...the one that exploded, the one police detonated and possibly 3 and 4th with men who ran away?

"Religion of Peace" alert. Now waiting for the obligatory statement from Bush...

even after a massive successful terror attack on 9-11, the US economy did not collapse. its going to collapse from a failed terror attack in Oklahoma?

the MSM is not going to squelch this over concerns about the economy.

Recap: One person killed in explosion, apparant suicide. As reported in this thread a witness 30 yards away feels the heat of the explosion. No other injuries from nails, screws or rat poison. Another witness says the smoke was about what you would see at a BBQ grill. Witnesses saw people run away after the explosion instead of standing still. Another says they were ME types on a campus that apparently has a large ME population. Cell phones go out in the stadium filled with 84,000 people, many with cell phones, after some hear an explosion. The normally ratings-hungry, oversensationalizing MSM is not reporting much on this story.

I'm going to bed.

I think they downplayed it until the fans could be gotten out of the area so not to cause a panic. We had a guy listening to 1520 which is the flagship Sooner station and not one word came over about a suicide bomber during the entire game.

Tragedy in Norman
Apparent suicide bomb kills one outside OU stadium

October 2, 2005 12:03AM

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- One person was killed in an explosion in a traffic circle about 100 yards from a packed football stadium at the University of Oklahoma on Saturday night in what authorities were calling a suicide.

"We are apparently dealing with an individual suicide, which is under full investigation," OU President David Boren said in a statement.

There were no other reports of injuries. There was no word on the identity or sex of the person who died.

The loud noise of the explosion could be heard clearly inside Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, where 84,000 people were watching the Oklahoma Sooners play Kansas State.

Officers cordoned off an area west of the stadium, known as the South Oval, and nobody was allowed out of the stadium immediately after the blast, which occurred shortly before 8 p.m. People were allowed out of the stadium about 8:30 p.m.

A police bomb squad detonated explosives found at the site of the blast. The detonation could also be heard in the stadium area. The area near the stadium was searched by bomb dogs.

"At no time was anyone in the stadium in danger," Boren said.

Kerry Pettingill, Oklahoma homeland security director, said the incident was under criminal investigation and the motive behind the explosion was not known.

As fans streamed out of the stadium after the game, they were routed around the crime scene. Some fans leaving the stadium were escorted by police to buses that were parked near where the explosion occurred.

The state Medical Examiner's Office was on the scene as was the Norman Police Department, firefighters, the FBI and officials of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

FBI spokesman Gary Johnson said an FBI bomb technician was providing assistance to local police. Emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, surrounded the area.

OU police Sgt. Gary Robinson said the body had not been removed as of late Saturday night as a bomb team continued to check the area for possible explosives before detectives could move in for their investigation.

Jaclyn Hull, an OU freshman, said she was leaving the game shortly before the explosion.

"We saw a little bit of smoke, about as much as you would see coming up from a grill," she said.

Stan Hilton of Tulsa said he heard the explosion while he was watching the game from his seat near the field.

"I became afraid at halftime when they had us locked in the stadium," he said after he left the stadium.

Larry Lucas II, an OU senior, said at the time of the explosion he was in the university's architecture building near where the blast occurred.

"At first I thought it was a prank because that's where the Kansas State buses were parked," he said. Lucas said he saw Kansas State players leave the bus before the game.

Authorities could be seen searching Kansas State players and coaches amid tight security as they boarded buses to leave the area.

Glad that your son is okay. Your first-person accounts on this thread have been most illuminating (especially considering the media blackout). Thanks a lot.
