The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

You folks are right. Even if we are warned they may still attack. What's worrisome is the first warnings may be misinformation/misdirection.

I stand corrected.

The critical day for a major attack is the 29th of OCT. That's the day that OBL could be annoited as the Mahdi (sp?)if he's able to pull off a major devastating attack or series of attacks with a cumulative effect of being far worse than 911 in either scope or intensity or both. The Ramadan Offensive is just too sweet for them to miss.

Pop is doing the same thing that hubby and I are to build up our immunity to flu's etc.

Similar to Granny in that we are using a special essential oil blend: clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus etc; 4-5 drops in an ounce of natural (not heinz) apple cider vinegar daily, and taking natural supplements.

No flu shots here.

Awwww no, A_D! That wasn't what I meant. You always present valid points from angles I haven't considered and it often sends me into valuable directions of thought. You're an awesome asset, don't think of being corrected.

I never usually get the flu shot but I was contemplating it this year. Since it's not going to work for the bird flu, why bother? Thanks for posting that receipe. I think I'll give it a try.

Davenport police say mysterious box isn't a bomb

A device found in a box wasn’t a bomb. But what it was may be out of this world.

Police were called to a Davenport home Sunday after a resident found a box with what looked like a bomb inside.

A police bomb squad removed the box for examination, and Capt. David Struckman said the device wasn’t a bomb.

Jessica Harper, of Bettendorf, said she left the box behind when she moved out of the house last month.

She said an eccentric friend of her mother sent the box a year ago but they never opened or threw it away.

‘‘He’s an astrologer who believes aliens live under ground,’’ she said.
She said the device was supposed to create vibrations that would keep aliens away.

Struckman wouldn’t say what it was.

‘‘It looked very dangerous, but it was not an explosive device,’’ he said.

Three accused of plotting Jewish attacks

10/18/2005, 2:28 p.m. ET
By NICOLE LANGE
The Associated Press

DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) — Three men on trial for plotting to attack Jewish targets in Germany insisted Tuesday that they never belonged to a terrorist organization.

The men, along with another defendant, are accused of belonging to Al Tawhid, a radical network believed to be linked to al-Qaida and headed by Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi — now a prominent figure in Iraq. All four were arrested in April 2002.

Mohamed Abu Dhess, a Jordanian who is accused of heading the group's German cell, told the Duesseldorf state court that Muslims are people of peace — and "we do not believe in weapons as a means."

"I dug deep into my memory and could find nothing related to terrorism," he said.

Abu Dhess, along with co-defendants Ashraf al-Dagma and Ismail Shalabi, is charged with membership in a terrorist organization, attempted instigation of weapons offenses and document fraud.

Prosecutors have asked that Abu Dhess be sentenced to eight years in prison, and al-Dagma and Shalabi to seven years and six months each.

"I never planned attacks against Jewish, Israeli or any other targets in Germany," al-Dagma told the court Tuesday.

Al-Dagma confessed that he made fake passports, but insisted they were only for his own use as he never had his own passport. "But I was never a member of a terror group," he said.

The fourth defendant, Djamel Mustafa, is charged with supporting a terrorist organization, breaking firearms laws and document fraud. Prosecutors have sought a seven-year sentence for him.

Much of the prosecution's case has been built around testimony from Shadi Abdellah, who was arrested at the same time as the other four and confessed to plotting to attack Jewish targets, saying the group discussed Berlin's Jewish Museum and a Jewish-owned discotheque or bar in Duesseldorf.

Abdellah admitted being part of the Al Tawhid group, saying he befriended leader Al-Zarqawi in 2000 while in Afghanistan to undergo al-Qaida paramilitary training.

Al-Qaida in Iraq, which is led by Al-Zarqawi, has claimed responsibility for executing numerous hostages, including the beheadings of Western hostages.

Abdellah told authorities the Duesseldorf-based cell operated largely apart from its parent group and chose its own targets and arranged for its own explosives and weapons.

In exchange for his testimony at this and two other German terror trials, Abdellah was given a reduced sentence of four years and was released in November after serving about half his time. He was also put in Germany's witness protection program.

The trial opened in February, 2004. A verdict is expected on October 26.

KylaStarr, is there a minimum age to use this blend? And how does it taste? Do you need to mix it with something else to make it palatable?

U.S. counterterrorism official warns of biological and chemical weapons

The top coordinator of U.S. counterrorism efforts warned Tuesday of more attacks despite progress in the war on terrorism and said he was concerned that terrorists were trying to acquire weapons of mass destruction.

"The threat is real," Henry Crumpton, the U.S. State Department's counterterrorism coordinator, said while visiting Indonesia nearly three weeks after suicide bombers killed 20 people and wounded more than 100 on the resort island of Bali.

Crumpton said progress has been made in the global war on terror, with several high profile arrests made and potential strikes thwarted. But, he said, "realistically, there will be more attacks."

"But what really concerns me is weapons of mass destruction," Crumpton said, pointing to alleged statements made by Osama bin Laden's terror network about its interest in biological and chemical warfare.

He also cited evidence U.S. officials said they found in Afghanistan that al-Qaida was working on anthrax weapons.(snip)

Russians exodus causing tensions in southern Russia
By Yoshihiro Okawa
Sekai Nippo correspondent
Published October 17, 2005

Ethnic Russians are moving away from Stavropol and Krasnodar in the southern part of the country to its European area, including Moscow. This exodus comes as the local ethnic residents in Chechen and Dagestan suffering from conflict and terrorism move into the neighboring regions of Stavropol and Astrakhan, crowding out native Russians.

The ongoing Chechen conflict and the destabilization of the Dagestan region are intensifying new ethnic frictions in the surrounding areas. Eleven years after war first broke out in Chechen, there is no end in sight to the conflict, and it is eroding Russia's social fabric.

Recently, Russian television and newspapers often allude to "the expansion of Caucasus ethnic groups in southern Russia." This refers to a phenomenon where residents in conflict-ridden Chechen and Dagestan emigrate into the surrounding areas, causing security in these areas to deteriorate. This has lead to a Russian exodus to Russia's European part.

In the eastern areas of the country, Russians have been emigrating out of Siberia and the Far East. They are being replaced by Chinese who are immigrating into the area.

Russian media tend to exaggerate Russian exodus. For example, Astrakhan saw the decrease of only 6% in Russian local population in the past 15 years. On the other hand, more than 300,000 non-Russians such as Chechens immigrated into Stavropol with total population of 2.64 million in the past decade. If Russian influx continues with current pace, Russian exodus is expected to accelerate.

The Russian government can control Chinese immigration into Siberia and the Far East regions through restrictive immigration controls. However, Chechens and Dagestans are Russian citizens whose domestic movement is guaranteed by the constitution. The emigration of local ethnic groups is expected to continue as long as conflicts and terrorism in Chechen and Dagestan continue.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently characterized the situation of Russia's Southern Federal District as "very serious," during the conference of republic presidents and provincial governors of the district. Reconstruction of destroyed social infrastructure and mitigation of conflicts are important to stop the influx of Chechens and other local ethnics, he said.

In reality, funds from the Russian federal government to Chechen and other north Caucuses republics have been disappearing due to corruption within the governments of regional republics. Statistics of such corruptions and irregularities are rarely made public. In a recent conference, Chechen President Alu Alkhanov admitted that thousands of Chechen residents forged documents to fraudulently receive housing revitalization funds.

The Russian presidential envoy to the Southern Federal District Dmitry Kozak stated his intention to facilitate revitalization of Chechen by having the federal government take over management authority of revitalization fund from the governments of local republics. President Alkhanov is skeptical about this, because residents of Chechen are dependent on the illegal flow of revitalization fund for their daily lives.

"If the federal government applies a strict control over the illegal flow of fund, that may accelerate emigration of residents out of Chechen further," President Alkhanov said. The heads of neighboring areas such as Stavropol have voiced similar opinions.

The governor of the Krasnodar region, Alexander Tkachov, recently expressed a fierce anger at the influx of people from Chechen and other areas, saying, "They are not bringing benefits to the region but only murder and rape."

"We have to mobilize all security agencies to push back the uninvited guests," he said.

Antipathy toward immigrants is on the rise among Russians in those areas and regions. In the region of Astrakhan, armed Russians and Chechen immigrants clashed recently and one person was killed. Buildings in a Chechen community were set on fire.

In another incident in the region, a Russian man told a Chechen immigrant boy, "This is a present to your father," and handed him a paper bag that contained a grenade. It exploded and killed the boy.

Personally I would be comfortable using it at a reduced amount for kids over 6. Maybe 2-3 drops. Younger than 6 I would want to check with someone who knows more about oils than I do, before I would allow them to ingest it.

I use the cider vinegar because my body is really acidic and I take it anyway. You could put the drops in juice or milk maybe. Or in those fiber shakes or health shakes people make.

I don't think it tastes bad at all. Spicy like cinnamon. The taste doesn't hang with you so it's not bad.

>> You always present valid points from angles I haven't considered and it often sends me into valuable directions of thought. <<

Same here.

My statement was in fact inaccurate and I'm glad you both spoke up. Just because we have warning doesn't mean we won't be attacked; however, IMHO is does reduce the chances of an incident at the warned site.

Again, what worries me is misdirection and misinformation. I'm also thinking that all these warnings are 'confessed' to provide a scare factor and make us use up valuable resources.

A TMer posted their 'playbook' and this is part of their scheme - issue false threats to get us rattled. Also, the more false warnings the greater the possibility that we could be lulled into dismissing a valid thread. The boy who cried wolf syndrome, if you will.

Again, looking at history and IIRC, most if not all AQ attacks have come with no immediate warning, but vague plots uncovered sometimes years in advance. That MO worked for them and I see no reason why they would stray from that scheme.

Adding to the flu preparations:

Echinacea Complete Care™ Wellness Tea
http://www.celestialseasonings.com/products/product/480.php

This has Chinese Star Anise as an ingredient (Tamiflu is derived from Chinese Star Anise) among other goodies that Granny often mentions. It is stocked in my pantry and we sip occasionally. At the onset of cold/flu, we increase use of the tea...

Combined with Zicam rapid melt lozenges(over the counter) as directed
http://www.zicam.com/Product.aspx?eid=3

At anytime if temp > than 100F, we go to the doctor.
I believe this is key with any bad flu season.
Many people wait too long to go to the doc and flu becomes more difficult to treat, ie. pneumonia.

Wash hands, wash hands, carry anti-bacterial wipes.

Don't touch icky things like escalator railings.

Wash hands.

Throw away toothbrushes or soak in 1/10 bleach solution after an illness so you don't reinfect yourself.

I don't do flu shots, but would advise those over 50 to go ahead and get them.

Realistically, I can't get excited or nervous about this flu. Since 1997, only 60 people have died. Yes, it can mutate and probably will. Compare the 1918 flu and the medical treatments and medical care available at the time. We're far advanced and the key again, is to seek treatment early...don't put off going to the doctor.

Egyptian man held in threat to city tunnels

Federal authorities are detaining at least one man of Egyptian origin who worked at a Middle Eastern market in Baltimore in connection with a threat that closed Interstate 95 and the Harbor and Fort McHenry tunnels after concern over a suspected terrorist plot to blow up one of the tunnels.

The shutdown caused gridlock throughout the metropolitan region as police and federal agents investigated the threat.

Federal law enforcement officials said the threat was made against an unspecified tunnel by an informant in a foreign country who said suspects were men of Egyptian origin living in the Baltimore area. The official said investigators had several names, but had no arrest warrants.

The informant's information was uncorroborated, the official said. He is being detained in a unspecified foreign county because of potential immigration violations. It was unclear whether the man was a United States citizen, the sources said.

The investigation has been ongoing for the past two or three days, but the decision to close the tunnels was made by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, who apparently were concerned that the suspects may act as word of the investigation got out.

According to the source who has been briefed on the investigation, the detained man is associated with Koko market in the 6000 block of Eastern Avenue in Highlandtown. There are unconfirmed reports on the WJZ-TV Web site that the plot involved taking a bomb-laden delivery truck from the market into a tunnel, where it would be detonated.

Authorities reopened portions of I-95 and the Harbor and Fort McHenry tunnels about 1:30 p.m.(snip)

The critical day for a major attack is the 29th of OCT. ... The Ramadan Offensive is just too sweet for them to miss.

Ramadan does seem like a good time for them to try something big - especially because of the two eclipses this year that occurred in that month. Although their prophecies about the Mahdi don't say that his identity will be revealed during a Ramadan with two eclipses, they do say that it will be "close" to that time. So even if we make it through Ramadan, probably the entire next year will still be "close enough" for their purposes.

It's not that unusual to have two eclipses in Ramadan, what's unusual is to have them both total and both visible from Mecca. At least some Muslim scholars have thought that this was what was meant by the prophecy. This year, the lunar eclipse was partial and not visible from Mecca, though I believe it was briefly visible from the far eastern tip of the Arabian peninsula; the solar eclipse was annular rather than truly total and although a partial eclipse was visible from Mecca the path of the maximum annular eclipse passed through the Sudan and Libya - not even through Egypt let alone Saudi Arabia. Still this might be good enough for their purposes, there seems to be an attitude in some Islamic circles that these prophecies don't have to be fulfilled to the letter in order to be "true."
