The critical day for a major attack is the 29th of OCT. That's the day that OBL could be annoited as the Mahdi (sp?)if he's able to pull off a major devastating attack or series of attacks with a cumulative effect of being far worse than 911 in either scope or intensity or both. The Ramadan Offensive is just too sweet for them to miss.

Ramadan does seem like a good time for them to try something big - especially because of the two eclipses this year that occurred in that month. Although their prophecies about the Mahdi don't say that his identity will be revealed during a Ramadan with two eclipses, they do say that it will be "close" to that time. So even if we make it through Ramadan, probably the entire next year will still be "close enough" for their purposes.

It's not that unusual to have two eclipses in Ramadan, what's unusual is to have them both total and both visible from Mecca. At least some Muslim scholars have thought that this was what was meant by the prophecy. This year, the lunar eclipse was partial and not visible from Mecca, though I believe it was briefly visible from the far eastern tip of the Arabian peninsula; the solar eclipse was annular rather than truly total and although a partial eclipse was visible from Mecca the path of the maximum annular eclipse passed through the Sudan and Libya - not even through Egypt let alone Saudi Arabia. Still this might be good enough for their purposes, there seems to be an attitude in some Islamic circles that these prophecies don't have to be fulfilled to the letter in order to be "true."
