Russia to deploy new hypersonic missile systems
RIA Novosti ^ | 16:46 | 27/ 09/ 2005

MOSCOW, September 27 (RIA Novosti) - President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Russia would deploy new hypersonic missile systems that would be virtually invulnerable to enemy defenses.

"We are developing and will deploy new strategic high-precision systems that have no rivals across the globe. These hypersonic systems will be capable of changing the course and altitude. They will be practically invulnerable, including to air defense systems," the president said speaking on live television and radio.

Commenting on the president's statement, an air defense expert, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Putin must have meant state-of-the-art air defense systems, or "weapons of the future" that specialists and researchers had been working on for a long time.

The expert added that the new system would combine the functions of air defense, missile defense and space defense.

The expert said the Russian army already had sea- and land-based missile complexes such as Bulava and Topol-M.

Putin also said that Russia would continue providing its army with mobile missile systems, state-of-the-art tanks, new and modernized air defense systems.

He added that last year Russia overcame an important psychological barrier when "allocations for army re-equipment topped the $5-billion profits from arms exports," while only a few years ago, Russia did not buy anything for the army.

"A great deal has been done in the past few years to restore the defense industry's financial health," Putin said, adding this included debt settlements and jobs.

He also said that expansion to foreign markets was a way to support Russia's defense sector financially. "If our specialists make it to foreign markets and uphold our interests there, it will be a very good job," the president said.

Yeah, right.

Their Navy is rusting/sinking at their moorings; they don't have the technical/economic abilities to tap their enormous oil reserves, etc. etc.

We are supposed to believe that they can field an advanced (and expensive) missile system? Don't make me gag.

I wonder how much of that was for nuclear warheads sold to the highest islamic bidder?

They can muster up some great tech, but they can't field it. The Kursk disaster may have been a superfast torpedo test, using advanced cavitation tech. 100 or 200 knots underwater tech. Amazing. Old sub blew up. Your point exactly.

But even if they could, some genius would figure to laser 'em down at launch when they move slowest and have full payload.

Russia test-launches new strategic missile

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2005-09/28/content_3553965.htm

Russia successfully test-launched a new sea-based intercontinental ballistic missile on Tuesday, navy officials said.

The new-generation Bulava missile was launched from the Northern Fleet's strategic nuclear submarine Dmitry Donskoi in theWhite Sea to the Kura firing range on the Kamchatka Peninsula, a spokesman for Navy Commander Igor Dygalo told the Interfax news agency.

The missile's warhead hit the target on the range at a pre-calculated time in its first test-launch, the spokesman said.

The solid-fuel Bulava missile can carry up to ten individually guided nuclear warheads and has a range of up to 8,000 km. It is based on the Topol-M land-based intercontinental ballistic missile. The missile is to be fine-tuned in 2006.

"The successful launch confirmed the high readiness of the marine strategic missile forces and the reliability of the navy's combat command system," Dygalo said, according to Interfax.

The launch came in the same day as President Vladimir Putin used a live call-in show on television to tout Russia's new strategic missile systems.

"We are developing and will provide the army with new high-precision strategic missile systems that are unique and unlikely to appear earlier in any other country," Putin said during the nationally televised phone-in.

Putin described the new missile systems as "hypersonic and capable of changing course and height during flight," saying the missiles will be invulnerable to the missile defense systems being developed in some of Russia's partner countries.

No,

The Kursk had old style torpedo's which creates Hydrogen and exploded in the sub (obselete design).

Most of Russia's tanks are T-72's. Most of the BMP's are BMP2. Look at the troops in Chechnya and how they are equipped! AK-47, many without body armor even during the second war....... Here's a little fact for ya. Most of these new super duper ADA systems are nothing more than old potatoes reheated. S200 I think is a SA-5 (improved), S400 is a SA-10 I believe....... Most of these new systems is old technology repackaged; improved and marketed as something new.

They want to sell their stuff too, and as long as it’s not to some Tin Pot dictator like Syria (Which they are SA-18 MANPADS) or others there is no problem. But in today’s world many build their own and the competition out there is fierce. Where does a Russian tank or fighter which is largely incompatible in doctrine and logistics fit into the equation? It doesn’t. Except for price where they are competetive, the Russians only have the scrap left over markets of Tin Pot dictatorships as their customers.

Russia makes a lot of its money off of sales to people who no one else is willing to sell to. Who other than Russia or China would sell Syria advanced MANPADS systems? So while their stuff is largely “junk” and inferior to it’s Western counterpart, it will continue to proliferate since it does work and they are willing to sell to Libya, Iran, N. Korea or some other rouge nation. Within NATO the French are the bottom feeders. Beneath them you get into the “sell to anyone” category which Russia and China fall into.

Yeah, that's why our (Russian) old rockets "Soyuz" fly to ISS without any problem and your "Shuttles" stand somewhere in the ass.
