Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VIII
www.freerepublic.com | September 24, 2005

Posted on 09/24/2005 9:58:36 AM PDT by Howlin

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

I was even about to tell you about my Wedgewood and Royal Albert too.

It depends; is it Wedgewood Wild Poppy?

I need to find some to finish out my pattern. :-)

I don't know her. But an odd thing happens sometimes when I read southern women funny books. They don't seem funny to me. I have to step back to appreciate the humor!!

[Why are dishwashers bad for "china?"]

I don't know, I think maybe the detergent messes up the glaze. But my Mother told me that and I don't question it. She had rules you know.

As I recall, when dishwashers first came out they were notorious for breaking what they were supposed to be cleaning (poor temperature control, wildly flailing sprat arms, etc.) -- so the prevailing wisdom was to wash your expensive dishes (the china ware) by hand and only wash the day-to-day stuff in the infernal machine. That's my memory of it and I'm sticking to it. :O)

She didn't want to ask the Feds in before the storm because she felt it would make her look bad. That screams "misplaced priorities".

She admitted forgetting important things like asking Bush for the military. So, what more important things was she thinking about instead?

She let thirty thousand people go hungry and thirsty because she decided they needed to go someplace else, and clearly that was more important to her than basic survival for them.

When the levees broke and the city was filling up with water, she asked us all to pray, because at that point she had no other ideas of what to do and just naturally assumed that nobody else did either.

Then when the storm was over, she still refused outside help because she thought she'd get blamed for the mess.

It's not about the storm, or anybody else, it's all about Kathleen.

So now we write her a check for a quarter trillion bucks?

Okay, I am watching Blanco on CSPAN from today; did she really form a group called Family Recovery Group of Louisiana and ask Bush to funnel ALL "relief money" though them?

Is she nuts? Or is she trying to get that money in the hands of her people?

With Landriue in the fallback position, I don't see any choice but to either federalize the reconstruction, or else just not do it.

We look at what the money paid for before the storm, then again during the storm, and the people in charge there come up short.

Nothing has changed, they aren't going to turn into General Honre overnight.

They're in the way in a huge way and they have to go.

Gov. Blanco is actually BRAGGING to Geraldo about "the effective evacuation" of New Orleans before Katrina. LOL! Bragging that there were no traffic jams out of N.O....a snide dig at Houston.

Just absolutely stunning.

Well her dress was a little. . .

now wait a Cotton picken minute here. There you go again . . . aren't there any sports threads or something around here?

You would think a hurricane thread would be safe for crying out loud. Manly things like death, destruction, floods, winds, daring rescues, oil slicks and sewage, fires and machinery, bridesmaids dresses.

Kathleen played a political game when people were going to die. She and Mary are not terribly bright. I suspect that when this started to come down, she got advice from some dem people and she was not clever enough to play the game.

And I still say, Blanco/Landrieu were thwarting Nagin because he is on their s@@@ list because he went off the plantation to be elected and he was exposing stuff in NO.

But I won't fight the battle for that point anymore.

Blanco and Landrieu were in way overe their heads, way over. They are dumb and venal. And they know what they did, look at their faces, they know they did wrong. Mary is twitching a mile a minute and her face in repose looks crushed. Blanco can barely keep it together, she is on the verge of tears constantly.

If you ever wanted to see a person who did wrong and knows it, look at those two women.

She wants people back, she wants to buy bus tickets home for people. She is approaching this like a social worker rather than a leader of a state. She is a ding bat.

She is on Geraldo saying that her evacuation plan -- planned a year in advance -- was executed as planned? It was grand and she watched it from helicopters?

A gas pipeline seems like a pretty easy fix, once you can get to it.

Not like oil where it can sludge up on you and clog big sections of the pipe when it isn't moving. That leaves us with X days shortfall, which can't be recovered easily, but the price bump would (assuming that the energy companies really price according to supply and demand) go away once the flow was fully established again end to end and everybody who needed gas was caught up.
