Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

The reporter who did the story on Galactica is a Cylon. Of course, so is Dan Rather.

Inner eye wall now touching the Louisiana coast.

I think Rush wins his $5.00 bet.

We need the booze!

Not yet we don't, I'm trying to stay awake!

Don't hammer me up more than needed.

He comes in after for photo ops when it is safe. If Port Arthur harbor is a mess, maybe he will show up to show just how much environmental destruction refineries can cause, and we should consider commuting with bicycles. Heck, when I was very young, that is how most folks in Amsterdam got to work.

Guess O'Reilly missed the interview with the Lt. Gov this morning. Said one thing they didn't take into consideration -- people taking all their cars instead of everyone leaving in one car. Said some took 3 and 4 cars which significantly increased the traffic.

My husband heard they couldn't reverse traffic because it requires three officers per on-ramp to keep cars from entering and causing a head-on...

The boots make her look taller.

Rain pants inside boots is not a smart move. All the rain that hits the upper part of her body will eventually end up in her boots.

Why is the President in his bunker?????

The time of natural disaster, if New Orleans is to be the model, appears to be the time of the looter and deviant. Its also the time for a fading power to make a last gasp. And potentially the time for terrorizing terrorists to commit greater terror.

I think they do. Children, too. It's because they don't have what we've all learned through life -- to tune things out.

Do what steveggg said. Lowest floor, windowless room, smaller the better. Bathrooms, closets are good options if no basement.

I used to love hurricanes in the Corps. Solid brick barracks, beer, and MRE's and water in the commons. That equals a few days of partying.
I have lost a my affinity for the damn things this year.

Well... Houston needs more roads, and we do need *something* like the TTC. That said, I do not know that his TTC proposal is going to fly - but *something* needs to be done, and something will be.

"That's where people are going to die," said Max Mayfield, director of the hurricane center. "All these areas are just going to get absolutely clobbered by the storm surge."

Blunt. Scary. What will happen to our refining capacity? Are we in for a wild ride? This report was not hopeful at all.
