A hurricane warning has been posted for the entire Florida Keys, meaning hurricane conditions with winds of at least 74 mph are likely by late Monday.

Yeah, the offshore area from Slidell to Gulport is shallower than off of Galveston (but its all relative.) Galveston Bay is similar to Lake Pontchartrain.

Hurricane Andrew produced an 18 foot surge in one area of south Dade County, Florida, with a surge of up to 11 feet for miles north. This happened in an area where the topography of the bottom of the bay and ocean is not even conducive to large surges, as it supposedly is on most of the Gulf coast.

A hurricane bearing my name would be a NICE one, no?

Gentle, yet FEISTY! :)

The thought crossed my mind!

Going to call it a night, long week ahead without the storm.

Don't let the dems hear you say that....they are convinced that the hurricanes this year are due to Dubya's environmental policies...
'
Al Gore supposedly gave a speech today saying that Katrina is our first ---and it is up to us to do something about climate change!!! lol

If he points south while he talks it would really feed that hurricane...and everyone in the Gulf should watch out!

Well, to quote the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir William Harcourt, 1889, "We are all socialist now."

Seriesly, plenty of people I know who are even conservatives believe that about global warming causing hurricanes.

You probably know about the several Spanish treasure fleets destroyed by canes - that was in the 1500's, I think. Mel Fisher famously recovered the Atocha.

However, Sir William was right, IMO. Some of us excepted, of course.

Seriously, what bothers me most is that with all the changing back and forth, these things seem to come in where they were first predicted.

You're right, I've noticed that a lot. If that holds true, we'll see a northern Mexico hit. I just watched someone say the ridge is going to build very strong driving this into Mexico? Time will tell. Gosh, you live in The Valley.

Accuweather seems to deliberately flop their tracks around to make sure they can claim they were right all along afterwards.

For example during Ophelia, one night in the early morning hours they had a forecast track with Ophelia into the Gulf of Mexico and a whole writeup about how they had years of experience and all sorts of expertise and were disagreeing with NHC...

Then a mere two hours later their forecast track was the same as NHC with Ophelia drifting NNE off of Florida towards the Carolinas.

My '96 Dodge 4x4 diesel pickup that weighs 6,000 pounds is probably contributing to global warming as well. I love the smoke that comes out of it when you first light her up.
