Rush emphasized the fact that the MSM is gleeful about its wish-fulfilment belief that Bush is so politically wounded by his poll numbers that he is a lame duck.
Rush dismisses this idea by referring to the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, in which the Democrats' "best and brightest" have been unable to lay a glove on Judge Roberts. Rush says that Bush is reshaping the judiciary, which is now the linchpin of the Democrats' influence and remaining power.
And Rush emphasized how tunnel-visioned the media are, and how completely absorbed they are "in the moment." In, that is, their own news cycle - whether it is a day or an hour.
I am not a coffee person, but I love iced tea. When I was on the road, the only place to get fresh brewed tea in most airports is Starbucks. I love their Peach Tea.
Today Rush did in fact discuss the deaths of senior citizens in Chicago during the heat wave you reference.
" Ostensibly that would be Breyer's seat as he is the oldest, but it could be (please let it be so) Ginsberg's seat. "
I think John Paul Stevens (born in 1920) is the oldest. Ginsburg (born in 1933) is getting up there too. Time for both to retire.
That's what I get for coming late to the party!
Thanks- I haven't been able to listen for the 1st hour..glad to know he discussed it..
Maybe I don't understand the situation, but isn't a second term president usually referred to as a lame duck, regardless of his poll numbers?
Two appointments would be quite routine, historically. Clinton had two, Reagan had three (O'Connor, Scalia, and Kennedy) . . .GHWB had two, Carter had none (like W in his first term). If the average tenure of a SCOTUS justice were 18 years one vancancy would open up on average every two years.
This caller is correct. W is poll whipped. As I've said it before, watch out for the knee jerk to this, we ain't seen nothing yet.
Thanks for your correction on the number of appointments.
I don't think this is correct. Nixon had three. Reagan had at least two.
I knew I would probably screw up the names of the Justices and their relative ages. But on one thing we can all agree, Breyer, Stevens, and Ginsberg all need to retire yesterday.
You aren't a lame duck if you can get things done, and if you can make a difference in congressional/senate races. Usually lame duck status only happens after the midterm election of the second term. One way of avoiding lame duck status would be to resign after the midterm election, thereby elevating a VP who would not be a lame duck. Not that that has ever been done.
Thanks for the clarification. You know, Social Studies is a lot more fun here than it ever was during my school days! :-)
To be absorbed "in the moment" is to subject yourself to the fog of breaking news - what in battle is called "the fog of war." If you stay in that fog, you have no idea where you will end up because you will never have any perspective. In the case of Katrina, perspective would be things like the fact that Katrina is perhaps ten times more expensive than any previous natural disaster. And that the second most expensive was Hurricane Andrew - and no other hurricane is a close third. And that in both Katrina and Andrew, the controversy involved a Republican president and a recalcitrant Democratic governor.
I am laughing so much over the story of "William Jefferson, Democrat of Louisianna"....that my dogs are barking at me and running around in circles...
Has Rush mentioned that William Jefferson is a D La.?
William Jefferson. (Democrat, Louisiana) Douchebag.
OMG...gasping for air.......ROFLMAO.....
(Congressman, William Jefferson, Democrat, Louisianna)
A few more of these, and it's going to turn into a drinking game. If he mentions one more time, William Jefferson (Democrat, Louisiana)...DRINK! (he just said it)
Somebody get out the camcorder. I want to see this.
I think the Feebies missed a few things when they tossed Jefferson's house....
