isn't a second term president usually referred to as a lame duck, regardless of his poll numbers?
You aren't a lame duck if you can get things done, and if you can make a difference in congressional/senate races. Usually lame duck status only happens after the midterm election of the second term. One way of avoiding lame duck status would be to resign after the midterm election, thereby elevating a VP who would not be a lame duck. Not that that has ever been done.
