I would imagine it is quite hard to cut a major transmission line. Even with a large excavator the operator would probably have to give it a few yanks.

It's been half an hour since your post. Where the hell is FEMA?The heck with FEMA. the President should probably just error on the side of safety and send in the military.

There was that story a few days back about a fire department responding to a brush fire, only to discover one dead,
one injured. Apparently, they were attempting to steal copper wire. Things didn't go as planned in the attempted theft.

The actual power company spokesman says no idea what went wrong - many rumors . . . per Fox interview a few minute ago . . .

That is what the Dept of Water and Power is saying. One of their employees cut a major cable.

I guess it was two simultaneous accidental cuts at two separate stations.

So lets see...if this reporting will be like the Hurricane coverage (as just a recent example). Los Angeles without power will simply turn out to be a couple bulbs broken and 3 people have stubbed toes.
Yes, but is it enough to bring Geraldo back from Aruba? Inquiring minds want to know.

LA Fire Chief on Fox again now . . . he's the one who said a line was accidentally cut . . . a few minutes later power company said they don't know about that . . .

What makes Los Angeles so damned special that they have to report things like a stupid car chase live on national television. It is about getting ratings and knowing if you can put fear into the American people, they will watch your telecast.
Al-Qaida tape said to threaten attacks on LA, Melbourne
Monday, September 12, 2005 at 07:08 JST NEW YORK In a communique coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the Sept 11 attacks on New York and Washington, a suspected al-Qaida operative has threatened attacks against Los Angeles and Melbourne, ABC News reported.
"Yesterday, London and Madrid. Tomorrow, Los Angeles and Melbourne, God willing. At this time, don't count on us demonstrating restraint or compassion," the 11-minute videotape reportedly warns.

Wasn't that one due to them running a line into Amish country?

For a while on Fox they were showing an arial view of what looked like a fire on the horizon, near where some refineries were burning off gas . . . this was a large plume of black smoke, not just a gas pipe burning off excess . . . but then they never went back to that shot . . .

What makes Los Angeles so damned special that they have to report things like a stupid car chase live on national television. It's because we are just cool, and have the best weather, and besides, we have lots of news helicopters with little to do. And hey, it gives you guys something to watch, and adds a little excitement to your life.

this was a large plume of black smoke
The local Fox station had a close up of the bottom of the big black plume which was the top of one of the cracking towers burning off product. (And I'm sure taking advantage of the situation a bit to dump some other stuff at the same time.)

When officials from various agencies talk on mic before they all get on the same page, they really can cause confusion. They should check their faxes for the talkingpoints memo before going on camera or mic. Otherwise, we get a mix-up like a 'looking for ME men' after the Murrah bombing in OKC, and then many 'ooops'es.
