Baby Susan Torres Dies From Infection After Miraculous Birth

Arlington, VA (LifeNews.com) -- Little baby Susan Torres died last night after battling a severe infection. She became the subject of international attention after her father decided to allow her mother to remain alive to give birth following a tragic car accident rather than letting both mother and baby die.

In an email provided to LifeNews.com, Justin Torres, baby Susan's uncle, said she passed away following an infection. An emergency surgery was unsuccessful.

"I am saddened to have to report that, following emergency surgery that we had hoped would correct a sudden deterioration in her condition, my niece Susan Ann Catherine Torres has passed away after only five shorts weeks with us," Justin wrote.

Susan Torres, a 26 year-old researcher at the National Institutes of Health, suffered a stroke in May after a melanoma cancer spread to her brain. Her husband, Jason, and her parents agreed to allow Susan to remain alive on a respirator until baby Susan was born rather than letting her die.

"Many of the people receiving this email joined us in prayer this summer and lent us their love, support, and hard work to bring her home," Justin wrote. "It was my fondest wish that we would shortly do just that. I hope that you will now offer my brother and his family your prayers for peace and comfort."

Susan Orr, a leading Bush administration official serving children's needs within the Health and Human Services Department, was also aware of baby Susan's death.

"It is with great sadness that I write to let you know that little baby Susan Torres died last night in the arms of her father from sepsis," Orr said. "Her intestinal track had completely withered and she was inoperable."

In August, doctors thought the prognosis was good for baby Susan to live, although they were still concerned about whether she would develop the melanoma herself. Babies in similar conditions with an afflicted mother develop the cancerous condition less than 25 percent of the time.

She was born two months premature and weighed less than two pounds.

At the time, Dr. Donna Tilden-Archer, director of neonatology at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, said Susan is "doing remarkably well."

Had she lived longer, Justin said he would have told his niece about the courage her mother displayed.

“I’m going to tell her mother was one of the toughest women I've ever met, that she was absolutely determined in what she did. And that, ‘You cannot believe how many people fought for you,'” he said.

I never claimed either. All I was saying it was her time to go.

I was referring to the comments made, by posters, that I replied to. If you weren't the one who made them, but instead slipped in the middle, there has been an error.

I have no doubt that it is a message from God. I doubt our ability to hear him though.
President Bush, end abortion now, or God will end our nation.

...that *this* is the incident that will tip the balance?

I didn't say that, nor was it implicit in my post. This is just one more in the ever-lengthening list of tragic human events that result from man's flirtations with evil; whether directly or indirectly. Also, your implication that there is some kind of balance, here, is inappropriate to the subject. There is not a balance between good and evil; there is a timeframe, in which evil agencies are allowed to operate, that has a predetermined end -- an expiration date, if you will -- after which they and their acts will be arrested, judged, condemned and punished. That isn't balance, that is simply allowing both good and evil to be manifest in a temporal context that provides mankind with the information required to decide for himself which is worthy of his patronage.

I, for one, have seen -- no -- have experienced enough. While I offer my condolences and pray comfort to the afflicted, my greater energy is to grasp the bars of Heaven's gates, shake them until the hinges rattle and shout, "Are You ready, yet? Are we done? How much longer?" an activity which I know to be entirely within bounds because He's more sick of it all than even I am. As badly as I'd like to see this all get wrapped up and dealt with, He wants it even more badly than I. And I understand that my voice shouting at the gates is simply an expression of His own righteous indignation with evil being echoed back to Him through me; it's a closed circle, and a part of the undrecurrent of all creation groaning under the weight of sin. I guess sometimes that groaning finds a voice, and I'm okay with being "it" once in awhile.

I'm tired of the excuses. He's got executive orders. He can use them in a series of orders starting with ending late terms abortions as part of his obligations to protect the citizens of this country.

You might be one of only a few who thinks God kills little babies to send the message that we shouldn't kill little babies.

That's not what I think, bright boy. God doesn't kill his own. He draws them to himself through the Gate of Death. He will deprive us because we deprive the defenseles and innocent of life itself. He will break our stone hearts open, if possible, to save us. And if nothing speaks, even stones themselves will scream.

Very sad. There was so much hope and love invested in this baby, not just from her brave dad, but around the world. But the family has faith so I hope they have some comfort knowing the little girl is with her mother in heaven.

Anybody know right off how many weeks gestation she'd reached when delivered? (Article only says "two months premature" and I don't remember exact number of weeks.)

God is sick of his own plan? I must have misunderstood something.

You misunderstand only slightly. God's overarching plan is progressing just swimmingly, but that does not mean that His wrath is not kindled aginst all ungodly; quite the contrary, it most certainly is. He is quite sick of it, yet, He forbears a little while longer.
