New Orleans Begins Confiscating Firearms as Water Recedes
Ny Times ^ | September 8 | ALEX BERENSON and TIMOTHY WILLIAMS

Posted on 09/08/2005 3:40:23 PM PDT by RDTF

Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.

No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns, or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.

But that order apparently does not apply to the hundreds of security guards whom businesses and some wealthy individuals have hired to protect their property. The guards, who are civilians working for private security firms like Blackwater, are openly carrying M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.

Nearly two weeks after the floods began, New Orleans has turned into an armed camp, patrolled by thousands of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, as well as National Guard troops and active-duty soldiers. While armed looters roamed unchecked last week, the city is now calm. No arrests were made on Wednesday night or this morning, and police received only 10 calls for service, a police spokesman said.

The city's slow recovery is continuing on other fronts as well, local officials said at a press conference late this morning. Pumping stations are now operating across much of the city, and many taps and fire hydrants have water pressure. Also, tests have shown no evidence of cholera or other dangerous diseases in flooded areas, though health officials have said the waters contain levels of E. coli bacteria and lead 10 times higher than what is considered safe.

Efforts to recover corpses have also started, although only a handful of bodies have been recovered so far.

Just how dangerous is the water in NO?

Yesterday, they were showing them taking samples and made the claim that there was 20,000 times as much fecal matter in the water as would be allowed in any water supply.

I thought that wasn't too helpful. No one was suggesting they should drink black water to begin with. It seemed irrelevant at the time but that is part of their justification.

They're also making noises about Hep A and cholera. And the presence of petroleum products and pesticides. But they didn't provide any very frightening info on that. They mentioned it will take a few weeks for the larvae to incubate which could cause the spread of disease. And the danger of Hep A is something they all need to get shots for. I expect this will be mandatory vaccination.

It seemed that if they didn't drink water out of the streets and got a Hep A shot, they should be fine if their houses have been on dry land throughout the flood.

They have found no cholera.

Look at all the people who walked through it trying to get out, and so far I've only seen about 4 or 5 deaths attributed to it.

Those have been people who drank it, pretty much an obvious no-no.

Thanks.

We actually differ only in that I see the realities as necessarily controlling in this instant, but something to be worked against.

By the way thanks for the heads up on the other article (about the seizures) I am finishing up another editorial on that one which I hope to publish tomorrow.

Cheers

Better news for those that could, possibly, maybe, sort of be tasked with moving "commodities" that are stranded. I will stake my nefarious reputation on the likelyhood that there is much more to this story.
Color me jaded,

That would be a dead man on my porch......to plan, prepare, survive and not be a burden on my gobbermint only to be shot (at) or threatened by agents in my own home ? This is friggin INSANE for the leadership to act in such a manner. These ass clowns are treating every home as a dynamic entry.....use a bull horn, knock on the door and folks will talk. stick the muzzle of that scatter gun in my home in such a manner ya need more than a screen door for yer survival at that point.....

BTW is this the same mandatory that was mandated prior to the storm and right after or is this a different mandatory that really isn't mandatory if ya sign a waiver if ya don't agree that mandatory is mandatory etc etc . Is this the City, States, Federal version of rumored Mandatory ?;O)

What a goobermint goatphuc...

Another thing I find interesting is the excuse (made by some freepers) is that if these people stay in their homes it just means one more body to feed and hinders the cleanup. B.S.

Does anyone believe that these people are going to stop eating if they are bussed out to Texas? We can get food to them at the Astro Dome or Kelly AFB, but not to New Orleans? I don't see why not.

Give them the shot and some food and water and soap, if they don't have it already, and let them stay as long as they like. It's their house, or at least it used to be. Isn't that cheaper then putting up somewhere else?

But hell no. Take their guns and kick their asses out. It just doesn't make any sense.

Well said...agree 100%. Such a citizen is eyes on the ground to assist to to be a burden. The weenies trying to kick em out need more help, support and poodleing than some of the survivors in NOLA region.......doom on such a plan.

That one has been around for a long time- yet no one seems to heed it. And no truer words been spoken.
We in this country have let trash take over the great expieriment our forefathers established for us - we have lost.
On the same note- while we have to fight two wars overseas, we have let the invasion at home go unchecked.
Millions upon millions have come from the south- not just Mexifornia's - but those that wish us dead.
We have been invaded and they will be allowed to vote, legally.
OK- thru ranting...

In later posts I mentioned that the best thing these LEO's could do with such people is to organize them into armed neighborhood watches in the relatively undamaged areas that they are finding them and thereby free up more of their own resources. These folks would probably do it in an instant.
