WASHINGTON -- Ford Motor Co. on Wednesday recalled 3.8 million pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles for a cruise control switch suspected of causing engine fires. It is the fifth largest auto industry recall in U.S. history.

Ford said the recall of 1994-2002 model-year vehicles includes the company's hot-selling F-150 pickup truck, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Broncos. The company said it would start sending out recall notices to vehicle owners immediately.

I have a 2001 F250 SD XLT exteded cab w/ a 6.8 ltr Triton V10.

I have to admit, it is by far the most favorite vehicle of all I've ever owned.

Up until I got this truck my favorite was a 73 Challenger I sold off back in 87. MOPAR!!!

What a coinkydink. My '96 F-150 was towed to the shop yesterday and I just got off the phone (not five minutes ago) with the mechanic. I had a short (and small fire) in the engine at the master cylinder for the braking system. The real problem, he said, was with a short in the cruise control but he did not know if there was a formal recall yet. Like I said, what a coinkydink...

Got that right. We call it GM-itis, which is when the door handles start falling off, the AC breaks, and the windows won't roll up, or down. never owned a Crysler.

Fords are ok, recalls notwithstanding. I did the tire recall on an Explorer Sport and I already did this recall with my Navigator. I don't think there is a better SUV than a Navigator.

I have a '90 full size 4X4 Eddie Bauer Bronco with a 5.7L Cleveland V8 engine that has never had anything go wrong with it.

New tires, one dock lock solenoid, one idler pully for the engine belt, new valve cover gaskets ~ not bad for 15+ years.

Maybe you should get out more.

I do enjoy the 425 HP Lightning pickup ~ it blows all the wannabe racers in the bushes. ;)

Doesn't affect me. Mine is a 2005 F-150 and I've yet to have a problem with it. Just oil and filter changes thus far. I've bought a dozen new Fords over the past 15 years and they have essentially been bullet-proof.

I have a 96 Windstar and seem to have this same cruise control cut-out switch on the master cylinder. I guess the Windstars are not burning down houses and killing people yet.

But now that I know the fix, I may just do it myself.

I've had several Fords. They all had multiple problems. I no longer own a Ford product.

However, the fact of the matter is that your Lightning does have the cruise control fire problem and that you should be carrying a fire extinguisher until you get that fixed.

Perhaps YOU should get out more.

My 2002 F350 Super Duty Crew Cab Dully 4 wheel drive with the 7.3 POWER STROKE is AWESOME!

Beats any of the over 20 GM and Dodge/ Chrysler vehicles I have ever owned!

If I get a recall notice I'll get it handled.

I'm definitely considering a 350 crew cab duely for my next truck, probably around 2007. It will absolutely be a diesel for sure.
If I do go for it, it'll be all the way, Lariat with heated leather captains all power everthing.

I do admit that I like the Chevs and GMs but they always seem to run about 25% higher in price.

No, silly. I asked if I hurt YOUR feelings. Remember, you told me to "get out more" because you didn't like what I wrote.

I have the Lariat with the 6 way heated leather seats! I think the 6.0 diesel liter problems have been ironed out. I would not by a 03, or 04 with one though.

I think the perfect truck would be the Ford body and running gear with the Dodge Cummings and the GM Allison transmission.
