Monday, Sept. 5, 2005 11:38 p.m. EDT Mayor Nagin: Gov. Blanco Delayed Rescue
After days of blaming the federal officials for not responding quickly enough to the Hurricane Katrina crisis, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin praised President Bush on Monday - and charged that Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco had delayed federal rescue efforts by 24-hours.
"I'm so happy that the president came down here," Nagin said of Bush's Friday visit to Louisiana in an interview with CNN. "He came down and saw it, and he put a general on the field. His name is General Honore. And when he hit the field, we started to see action."
But Nagin had harsh words for his state's leaders, telling CNN: "What the state was doing, I don't frigging know. But I tell you, I am pissed. It wasn't adequate." The New Orleans Democrat said he urged Bush to meet privately with Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco during the visit. The meeting took place aboard Air Force One, he said.
After reviewing the crisis with Gov. Blanco, Bush summoned Nagin for a private chat - where, according to Nagin, Bush explained: "Mr. Mayor, I offered two options to the governor. I said . . . I was ready to move today. The governor said she needed 24 hours to make a decision."
Reacting to the governor's footdragging, Nagin lamented: "It would have been great if we could of left Air Force One, walked outside, and told the world that we had this all worked out."
"It didn't happen, and more people died."
I was at a city council meeting today and the subject came up. People there were definately blaming Bush for a slow response.
Nagin may be right about Blanco - but can anyone tell me what this guy has done since the whole mess, except complain and blame others?
I totally agree with your post. There was a total abdication of responsibility and leadership by the mayor and governor. Until help arrived they could have at the minimum provided security and they failed at doing even that.
Naggin Nagin is at it again.
Nagin knows which side to be on, and he's taking it. He knows the truth will come out in the wash, and it's not Bush that's going to take the hit. Thank God Bush came in to save those people from their own governor. God bless him.
She cowered under her desk, sucking her thumb. That's something.
What city do you live in?
Looks like he hits the bong a lot to me..
I'd love to be a fly on the wall of Air Force One when Bush had a little talk with him . WEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Nagin endorsed Jindal in the governor's race over Blanco. That would seem to confirm what you said about them not ever getting along - she probably is holding a grudge against him as well.
Yes, most city council meetings are liberal so that is not a surprise.
You and I are on the same wave length, dfwgator.
Some women should not try to be leaders. Blanco isn't a leader. The same can be said about some men.
The worm is definately starting to turn. I expect by Friday, the MSM will switch from 24/7 Bush bashing to "now is not the time to point fingers" mode.
"I wonder if Blanco was receiving orders on what to do from the DNC?"
Actually, I thnk Blanco is stupid all on her own .. she doesn't need any help ;)
I'll bet Nagin wishes he remained a Republican.
Scum elect scum, trash elect trash. Simply said, that's all there is to it.
Anyone post this on DemocraticUndergound? They were ready to have Nagin run for President.. wonder what they would think now...
Yes.. and not only that, but, I wonder what Jessy Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Elijha Cummings have to say after these new revelations after they have made racial fools of themselves in President Bush.
