I heard a 2001 Rehnquist interview on CSPAN, yesterday. He explained that often the other Supreme Court Justices are not nominated because of the fear that it would cause animosity amongst the justices...feeling that they should have been there instead. Interesting.

I agree Chris....the next pick will be Janice Rodgers Brown. That would be outstanding! Cry havoc!

I like Roberts. He was a close friend of Rehnquist and others in the conservative lawyers network, and will not be a Souter. He is young and could be CJ for 40 years. He is a natural leader and will have the extra impact on the judiciary that his CJ status allows him to have. A very good choice. God, I hope so. The SCOTUS needs to get the culture war out of the courts before it tears the country apart.

When a new CJ is appointed after eleven years of no new AJs, and two members are over 80, the CJ has to buy the Depends.

I am imagining Stevens there on the bench asleep with drool running down his chin and one of those old Sheep's horns in his hand so he can hear arguments.

Clarence Thomas definitely didn't want to go through that ringer again. I don't blame him, after the smearing he went through in 1991.
I think that Diane Sykes of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals is the best possible choice.

Antonin Scalia wanted the job. He is not a happy camper. I wouldn't be shocked if he retired. Then Bush could nominate Michael Luttig to succeed him.

I thought it strange when she said she would stay on until a new Justice was named since the Court did not reconvene until October. Now we have her replacement named as Chief Justice and she will be there when the Court reconvenes.
Someone was definitely thinking ahead because they had to know that Chief Justice Renquist was in bad shape so O'Connor chose to stay and probably also why O'Connor had nothing but good things to say about Roberts when I would have figured she would have wanted a woman to replace her. Now we will probably see that woman appointed.

Antonin Scalia wanted the job. He is not a happy camper. I wouldn't be shocked if he retired. So you think if Scalia is not made captain of the team, he will take his ball and go home? That seems to me completely contrary to the man's character. I can see him stepping down, but not out of petulance at not being appointed Chief -- a person can only take so much of having to read the garbage that passes for opinions by the Court's liberal members before going batty.

I agree with you! The Chief Justice was smiling away!

Interesting analysis about Scalia. Hard to believe he would pick up the ball and go home but if he does, then I like your proposed pick.

You are right about the trolls. They stick out like a sore thumb even when they get the facts -- they keep right on trashing like they hadn't been told a thing.

I guess Ann C won't be pleased. Oh well...as I have said to others about their choices, when Ann Coulter is elected president, and there is a vacancy on the SCOTUS, then she can nominate a replacement.

I think Scalia or Thomas deserve it more.. and we know for a fact how they operate in the big leagues..I'm not comfortable with this.

As far as I'm concerned, make Ginsburg Chief and nominate a Scalia-like replacement for Rehnquist's spot. Makes it look like Bush "compromised."Ah, are you lost?

Dubya has confidence in Roberts, and that is good enough for me. I would have preferred Scalia, but there isn't the age problem with Roberts. He could conceivably serve for twenty five to thirty years.
I expect the Dimwits to lose all pretense of bipartisanship, give Roberts a rough ride, and then go with a filibuster on the O'Connor replacement. I hope they do, assuming Frist has the votes to invoke the constitutional option. This is going to be interesting to watch.
