"Listening to Britt Hume now on c-Span re-run FNSunday saying that NO never had a hurricane disaster plan, potent stuff."

Louisiana has become the focal point of anger toward inept corrupt local officials and stolen that distinction from Floridah. We can at least reasonably hope to gain one more Red state from this hellish ordeal.

Here's the context of O'Connor's letter that pertains to when she steps down:

Dear President Bush:

"This is to inform you of my decision to retire from my position as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, effective upon the nomination and confirmation of my successor.

On a semi-related note, did you see that odd report on FNC yesterday about Al Gore arriving in LA? The reporter said she thought that Fox was the only network to catch him on tape, and when they asked him, he refused to comment.

I doubt he's there to rescue anyone but the inept Blanco. Probably joining with Weasley and Witt to plan next step to resist the feds running the relief effort.

(aside -- watching FNC in Lubbock as refuges arrive. About a one-to-one ratio of local and state LEO to the displaced persons.)

Sadly what you say has been stated many times. It always upsets my Teacher friends because they are really smart, dedicated Teachers. Journalism is what I have heard the most about and seems to be right on. The real Smart People go where the money is "Engineering" and the Medical Fields like "Biotech, if they can afford it..

Similar article on newsmax - word is getting out:
IMHO 2 of the keys here are in the next to the last and last paragraphs:

The Louisiana Democrat has also failed to declare a state of emergency - in marked contrast to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour and Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, who both issued emergency declarations before Hurricane Katrina struck.

State and federal officials also told the Post that Gov. Blanco did not reach out to a multi-state mutual aid compact for assistance until Wednesday - more than 24 hours after breaches in New Orleans levee system had flooded the city and killed thousands.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco: No State of Emergency

Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005 12:47 p.m. EDT Gov. Kathleen Blanco:

No State of Emergency
Though her state has been devastated by Hurricane Katrina and thousands are believed dead in New Orleans, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco has yet to declare a state of emergency and refuses to cede authority over rescue efforts to the federal government.

"Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans," the Washington Post reported in Sunday editions.

Story Continues Below
Gov. Blanco's office rejected the request, the paper said - concerned that such a move would be comparable to a federal declaration of martial law.

Fox commentator said in some ways the peope in the Astrodome are BETTER OFF, because they are finally getting medical care!

####
I was thinking the same thing about the children - the love and concern they will receive from Texan volunteers may introduce a real cultural awakening in some of them. It could be a life-changing event for the better.

"You must have been watching a different Shepherd Smith than I. It looked like he was going out of his way to point out that the feds had dropped the ball and people were suffering due to GW adm instead of incompetent state officials"

I interpreted his comments, assuming he had no c;ue as to what was going on outside of the area. I am not sure that he got much information. His frustration was obvious. I have been involved in similar (but far less devastating) and can tell you that what you see is IMMEDIATE, what you smell is IMMEDIATE. What info you are given is BLURRED AND NOT IMMEDIATE, NOR TIMELY.

Shep is from Mississippi and has family down there. I suspect his only thought was to get help for all and he went after the feds. Did he even know the locals had totally dropped the ball? Up until yesterday, the media was reporting that Bush was ignoring the effort.

What is your conclusion (synapsis) of what was the direct cause? Was it the material, the lack of upkeep, the over-whelming push of the storm, the Barge or all of the above. I know the pull of the Barges and the undertow from swimming in a river that had huge barges come around the bend and take you by surprise. We would all get out of the water as fast as we could and watch the barge pull the water from the banks of the river. After it went by the water would recede. It was really scary when we were still in the water swimming like hell for shore.

Are any of you listening to Newt on Fox right now???

He hasn't mentioned Bush....but he has thrown him and everyone but himself under the bus...

He says this should be fixed NOW...he want Rudy Guiliani to be head and blah, blah, blah...

BUT, he had to keep referring to getting this and that passed QUICKLY by Congress....LOLOLOL

Therein lies the problem Newt...and you are really good about saying what isn't being done right....but you aren't having to get legislation passed in a Congress that absolutely does NOT want this to go well for Bush...

Newt just lost me totally....

Reporters may travel to exotic places, interview the famous and near-famous, smooze with their sources, and cruise the same cocktail parties, but I swear to you that I am convinced that Freepers are better and quicker informed than they are.

I'm not defending the performance of the NOLA PD, and from what I've read, most of them who were able to work, did so, and did so well. A few bad apples in every bunch.

I would also "excuse" the loss of composure (not looting, but suicide, despair, etc.) of more than usual, given the enormity.

What I won't excuse is the reality denial by the mayor and state officials that civil order was lost, and that they needed help, that their forces were in way over their heads. They didn't do any gap analysis.

Geraldo has been a big problem, he has been schizophrenic and keeps shouting and over dramatizing this tragedy. I would love to put him on "prozac". These victims of their State and local government stupidity need to know that the grownups are now in charge and Geraldo has only been positive yesterday when he was pratically doing cartwheels when the Military showed up. He needs to stop depressing these already depressed people and tell them it is going to get better and that there is hope. They will have a better life. Shep and Geraldo need to share a rubber room with Cooper. Greta showed more manliness than they did except the abandoned animals and pets segments.

Then what do they say when they mean Calvary and not cavalry?

Most of the MSM are staunchly anti-Christian bigots and would not refer to Calvary.

I suspect the President told him to sit down, shut up and hang on - the adults are taking over you bumbling, disgraceful idiot.

^^^

I certainly hope that the management of reconstruction of NO is kept in Federal hands, and not handed over to some joint-coalition-local-state-church-civic-committee who will dither for longer than the folks have in NYC.

Newit wants to run for President .. that is why he's stirring away from the President

What Newit fails to understand that one of the reason the President was reelected was because the voters Trust him and because of his Leadership

The Corruption with the politicians in NO & LA has been a long running joke for YEARS

Sadly, we are now seeing the neglect from the corruption with this Hurricane

If Newit was smart .. he won't jump on the Bash Bush Bandwagon .. because when all is told .. It will the Officials in NO & LA that will be nailed for this mess
