Prayers for George W. Bush, who is bearing great burdens tonight.
And condolences to the family of this great jurist. His name will go down in history as a respected and beloved man.

It was the combustible combo of Rove's machine and Teddy driving down 10 at the same time. Upset the balance.
Where is Teddy anyway?

Yes, Edith Jones would be a good choice. If I'm not mistaken it came down to between her and Souter when 41 made his first SC appointment. Think of how different the court would have been if that lying-liberal-pretending-to-be-conservative had been rejected instead.

Well, that's what I was putting across if you read my post carefully.
I wouldn't even give Dershowitz credit for spelling his name.

Bush will need a third pick to really shape the court. With 3 more years in office, he may have that choice. Judge Stevens is 85 years old.

I would like to see Thomas. But I understand the idea of picking a new justice simply to avoid having THREE fights. I think there will be three fights anyway. There is a separate confirmation process for CJ. So if either Scalia or Thomas is nominated for Chief Justice, that's one hearing, plus one to replace the justice slot vacated by Rehnquist and one to replace O'Connor (John Roberts).
So if there's going to be a fight, then by all means, let's git 'er done! Although many on FR disagreed with Ann Coulter at the time of the Roberts nomination (myself included), I think that she was spoiling for a fight. Now, in the space of one (unfortunately) death, we again have the chance to have that fight.
I see a two-pronged strategery coming: fight, and educate. Or, fight BY educating. What is the real role of judges? I just bought "The Federalist", a book containing the Federalist Papers, and if I properly read the TOC, Federalist 78-82 deals with the issue of the Judiciary. So I plan to read and re-read, and then be ready to offer my opinions to anyone who wants to listen.

Yeah - technically a different office. New confirmation. So we actually have three confirmations to anticipate, not just two. I might want to stock up on the Zantac now. (I already need it, listening to liberals)

Let's all have a silent moment of prayer to thank God that John F. Kerry is not the President of the United States.

again...and i will keep repeating myself...i was not challanging his integrity...I JUST WANTED TO GET MORE INFORMATION...AS I AM NOT READILY NEXT TO A TELEVISION...I GREATLY ADMIRED THIS MAN...AND HONESTLY KNOW THAT HE IS IRREPLACEABLE...IF YOU WOULD LIKE...I WILL WAIT 5 YEARS BEFORE DECIDING TO REACT OR COMMENT TO ANY STORY HERE... "Lighten up, Francis..."
the best way to end an argument is to not argue. Things were said, clarification was issued, you seemed to get it, no need to wait five years. It's okay. Calm. Peace. (and yes, please don't "shout").
