Gov. Kathleen Blanco, standing beside the mayor at a news conference, said President Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation for the low-lying city, which is prone to flooding.

Other federal and state officials pointed to Louisiana's failure to measure up to national disaster response standards, noting that the federal plan advises state and local emergency managers not to expect federal aid for 72 to 96 hours, and base their own preparedness efforts on the need to be self-sufficient for at least that period. "Fundamentally the first breakdown occurred at the local level," said one state official who works with FEMA. 'Did the city have the situational awareness of what was going on within its borders? The answer was no."
Don't you know that she was hoping to blame a needless evacuation on the President. And then began the backfire.....too late for her to retract those words so she and her compadres are trying to herd cats now.
Totally what I have been thinking and just posted about before I saw your post. It backfired on her. I hope those who have voices louder than mine can come out and say this.
If the Democrats insist on Katrina hearings, they are going to be unpleasently surprised by what surfaces. They not only had Hurricane Ivan and a simulated exercise called Hurricane Pam, they knew from as far back as 1998 when Hurricane Georges came through that even the Superdome was inadequate for the 14,000 they had to handle at that time. It was mistake after mistake...even after prior warnings. This is another reason these people failed to act sooner, as they literally gambled with poeple's lives.
Wrong troll, Nagins skipped town for Baton Rouge, he had buses avalable to evacuate people before the hurricane hit, and did not use them.
As usual, you trolls have your heads up the methane highway..
So true. I was flabergasted that they didn't START evac until Sunday am!. I would have packed up by Saturday. I went thru Andrew. No way would I have waited for someone else to tell me to go.
I watched him foam at the mouth about how the president "didn't do anything." As mayor, it was his responsibility to see that his city was taken care of and if that means notifying the governor and the president, then he should have. The governor could have done more if Nagin hadn't been such a coward. And then the president could have done more SOONER.
Your ranting doesn't impress anyone but you.
First of all, I am not "you people"...
And if Nagin was intent on evacuating the city, why didn't he use the school buses to get the poor people out? And if he's not a coward, why did he high-tail it out of a city that he was responsible for?
"Voluntary" evacuation in the face of such incredible, imminent danger is not going to cut it with me. It should have been mandatory.
Take your argument elsewhere. My thinking is too logical to accept excuses and justifications for someone elses' weaknesses.
Troll, when will you learn?
"As for the buses, some of them were used to take people to the Superdome."
Funny.. then explain this:

Take a look at those buses, they're really going anywhere, aren't they!
AND:
Here's the southeast Louisiana evac plan supplement, most recently revised in 2000.
Go to page 13, read paragraph 5. It states:
5. The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating.
"All that said, I am not saying that Nagin is without fault."
LOL, whatever troll.
"He was being real, all the way to when he started crying."
Oh yeah, tears from a crocodile are real too.
Especially Nagins whine about how the buses he had on hand werew unusable because they didn't have toilets and weren't Greyhounds.
They are leaking diesel now too.
What are you providing by trying to lay blame or disect the events.... it is over hindsight will not help the survivors. Maybe having a discussion of what would help the survivors a bit more?
"The mayor was expressing his frustration at the situation."
By running to Baton Rouge, and then doing nothing but whine.
And by leaving buses rusting in Lake Nagin.
WOW.
Lake Nagin.
Very good.
Nagin Cried
People died.
Admittedly, I borrowed the term from martin_fierro.
Dunno who started the term "Lake Nagin" for the pond the buses are sitting in, but I saw Martin use it first.
But.. that is a good one!
"Nagin Cried, People Died."
Future T-shirt.
