President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Well, I wouldn't want my kids exposed to kids with dysentery. It may not be airborne, but my kids (despite my germ phobia shoved down their throats) like many other kids are just stupid about sanitation. I know they must be because they bring home every frigging bug that hits their schools.

Another Texan in the White House would absolutely put the Dems out of their minds.

Don't know why...the Dems put one there once. ;)

According to an NPR story yesterday, "Many who fled flooded New Orleans for shelter in Houston's Astrodome are already eyeing potential jobs and considering making Houston their new home. Will evacuation turn into immigration?"

Of course it will. I've been saying this since day one. These people are lazy! It's Texas' problem now.

Her name is Floritta Greve, age 71 with an aged dog named Dusty.

She prepared, but stayed behind to care for her old dog, which is all she has of family in this world.

She is a survivor with a great attitude, and for any age, has a mind as sharp as a tack. I love this woman, and pray someone who needs a Grandmother with a positive influence takes her in... close to her home :)

You're welcome. Yes, I saw that about the mayor and Oprah flying over NO. Someone had already mentioned on this thread so I didn't bring it up. I can see the mayor doing this, but Oprah too?

DrewsMum, Good for you! I too am searching hotels and motels.

To all, amom just called back with questions to give the truth about this disaster. It appears the volunteers are blaming Bush so she is going in informed.

She needs the time of the first new conference President Bush gave on Friday, August 26, 2005 declaring the Gulf Coast a disaster area, allowing FEMA to set up staging areas.

I've seen those systems all over the country (guess which kinds of states) and they're all more or less the same. They make it impossible for someone who wants to get out and get ahead to do so. It crushes those that want to excel and get ahead, like Socialism and Communism do. Hmmmm......

This event will be the boost out that most of those people needed. Texas has lots of jobs and our welfare system (for the most part) is oriented towards getting people off of it and back into society.

Fox is interviewing an officer named, "Hunt Downer".

LOL, only in America. That is the most appropriate name for a man directing rescue operations.
