Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

The rule of the three's. Under extreme conditions your survival, given decent physical condition, is generally:
3 hours for enviro (think wet and naked w/extreme temps)
3 days hydration (maximum)
3 weeks nutrition.
Intoduce illness, disease, or injury, and each of these markedly decrease survivability; without human intervention.

Go find something else to argue about.

Obviously we are talking at cross purposes, I apologize if I seemed argumentative, that was not my intent. It appeared to me that you were condemning people in MS I now realize you were not. I was trying to figure out why you chose the phrase you did – I have concluded that we are just reading it differently.

I thought you were insulting the people grieving in MS, I think I was mistaken and I apologize if my questing seemed harassing.

I'd like to join the Amen corner, dog.

Times like these reveal character. I now know a lot of characters on FR who I won't have anything to do with from this point on.

The tourists being captured, abused, even killed - that's just horrible - and it's sourced to the NYT (for whatever it's worth) so it's not an "unsubstantiated rumor" - God that makes me sick - I know vengeance belongs to the Lord, but I'm longing for some right now.

Hastert is right--do NOT rebuild New Orleans as it is below sea level.

Hastert's a boob.
The levees will be repaired and the water will be pumped out.
There's obviously gonna be a LOT of cleanup, including the razing of condemned properties.
But there is also a LOT of valuable private property and infrastructure that can (and will) be salvaged and refurbished. It'll be expensive, but it will be done. So the number one objective for government should be to rebuild the levees so that they are MUCH more protective than what was there previously.

They started to show bodies today. It kinda was only a matter of time. None of the shots were even remotely close for any sort of ID. I think if it is more or less inadvertant then it will probably be OK. I would imagine once more and more people are moved out, private pics will surface and find their way online. Probably not on the news channels.

More horrifying than bodies though include stories of children being raped and actual shots fired at rescuers.

Water is the number one issue the people in the disaster areas are short of, and the rain is DRINKABLE water. This is a very big deal.

No problems in Texas. Reunion arena, and the Dallas Convention center are well staffed and prepared. Provision is made for "day passes" so that people can access additional services.

Rebuilding Los Angeles after an earthquake I will buy.

Rebuilding New Orleans as a good part of it is below sea level? No way. Hastert is correct--I don't want my tax dollars rebuilding New Orleans.

But when the next big quake hits San Francisco or LA, are we going to tell them not to rebuild because their area is an earthquake danger?

That depends on if it fall into the ocean, if so I would say yes I would say do not rebuild!!

So in isolated areas where people from NO are dumped, they're having the same problems as they are in the city?

There are so many lessons to be learned from this. I think we are getting some of them, but we are not even close, I think, to a full understanding of what we need to know.

Some MREs suck, some are ok...We keep some on hand for emergencies, like getting stuck in the snow, although we are more likely to eat them on a trip cause we can't stop at a restaurant...
