Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

His job is to organize things before hand and let the people do their jobs during - and part of that is by keeping the heat of the press away from the people who are working.

Why do we need a President is also a valid question under your logic.

You have obviously never worked under a good commander (leader) in a controversial field of endeavor.

I can't take credit for the busses to polls comment but it is true.

I can take credit for winning the pool at work on when JJ would arrive, I was in an hour of his arrival to the amazement of all who thought he wouldn't come at all.

But once money was appropriated, I knew JJ would be here.

folks the use of relief money from the feds and that volunteered is going to rival the UN oil for food program.

Yall watch, I said it first, people are going to get rich off the building of NO and it won't be the people who do the work.

You are right, logic and the ner-do-well's involved in this mess don't compute. This is what so many of us are trying to figure out. This is part of the frustration as I watch this wanton destruction. Maybe we are too logical?

Did we ever anticipate such anarchy in a major American city?

yeah, FNC with Wallace on now is drifting towards CNN-lite bashing Bush. everything is the federal government's responsiblity, state and local officials (since they are Dems in this case) get zero scrutiny.

talk radio had better starting reving up the counter attack today, you just cannot deal honestly with the Dems and take politics out of any situation, no matter what it is.

Harrigan reporting a showdown between police and a green Cadillac. Now, more shots fired off in the distance, and soldiers responding to that.

Great post of reality to allay people's fears that terrorists could have much of a chance to damage a levee.

Well, I DID work in media a long time and saw similar BS. But, really, I don't want to argue with you. I won't criticize Brown anymore. He's a hero, okay?

The problem is that you *require* those portatowers to be there for the handsets to work. They have *no* peer to peer capability without the tower.

FRS/GMRS units are NOT military and they do NOT require a license (for most freqs). And they're cheap.

Some arrogant jackass on MSNBC said this morning: "If we can get here, why can't FEMA?" My reply would have been, "Because FEMA has a harder job than flying in a crew of 20 to stand on the sidelines and yammer. We have to actually DO something: make plans for clearing debris, restoring infrastructure, bring in food and water for 800,000 people, rescue 100,000 stranded people, retrieve the dead, and arrange destinations for the hundreds of thousands of evacuees." That takes a little time and a little planning. Talk is cheap. Screw you."
