Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Were these buses parked here when then could have been used to evacuate BEFORE Katrina hit too?

My sister told me she heard that buses were "made available" before the storm. I guess she heard it on the Weather Channel, which is what she's been watching. I don't know any more than that.

According to WWL it was the Mayor who made things better by whining about it last night. Somehow he made Bush take it seriously. Right.

It's probably even questionable whether a Ryder truck type bomb with Nitrates and oil would be able to take out a levee sufficiently, though I'd expect it to have a chance; perhaps truly huge quantities of plastic explosive would be needed in a truck.

Personal suicide bombs work through the dispersal of shrapnel over a wide area. What you need for a levee is a really enormous force.

One thing people consistently do is overestimate the force avaliable to humans relative to that of nature; the force of the water against the side of these levees really makes all but the largest of bombs look like a joke.

If you check the threads, I was suggesting this before Katrina hit.

You're right of course. Skimming and gouging are long-held traditions. Get elected to something and it's like "hitting the big one." I grew up in Louisiana too (Houma). Where are you from?

Not a defense of the Governor, because I think she's pitiful, but the situation in NO cannot be compared to the situation in MS and AL.

Harrigan interviewing what sounds like a tourist with a knife on a bike. In the middle of the interview, he heard a possible gunshot. The security in the region have their hands on their guns in response.

The fire is coming closer to Harrigan's position.

We have a portable cell phone tower & ground unit set up right outside our city hall. It is a self-contained unit and certainly could be deployed by a Chinook or 2. All you would need is microwave to link it to the grid. Emergency antennas could be deployed via those helium blimps or even repeater stations. We have the technology. I've seen current video of it rolling out on flatbeds (a local company makes military comm. equipment and I recognize the stuff).

A televised nightmare that destroys the PC LIE that "all people are basically good" and upholds the doctrine of the total depravity of man

Exactly what I've been saying. We are seeing the results of "tolerance" and "acceptance" of every moral degeneracy known to man. Without Jesus Christ this county is doomed to this kind of barbarity.

Cajun Girl astutely noted earlier this week that the NO politicos can readily get people on the buses to the polls on Election Day but couldn't be bothered to bus people out of NO 48 hours prior to a disaster.

Excellent assessment of the differences between the state level leadership in Mississippi/Alabama vs Louisiana

Wonder why Jeb Bush or Rudy - someone with disaster management experience doesn't call Blanco and volunteer to help. Surely someone could reach out personally and let her save a little face to save lives.

'Those with wealth need to step up to the plate.'
Has John Kerry-Heinz been heard from?"

We could do a whole list of the DIMS w $$$$s - to start with:
Corzine
Feinstein
Kennedy
Jesse Jackson (he could donate some of the money he scammed from corporations)
