President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Maybe this has been asked but I have been wondering why they couldn't have used trains to move people to a safer region, prior to the hurricane. It certainly would have expedited evacuation and possibly saved countless lives.

*** What possible direction would you need from a government official to direct you toward that big round, domed life saver?***

Remember something...

You are dealing with a population that is used to having EVERYTHING handed to them, from food, to money, to drugs.

And now, they just can't go to the SuperSeven and get a snack. Or have the Van come and take them grocery shopping...

There is no golf cart waiting to meet them at the bridge, taking them to salvation, and people waiting to hand out water and serve them a meal....

These folks have NEVER faced TRUE hardships like they are facing now, and that is a MAJOR weakness in our society...

Scientologists in the hood?
Haven't met too many brothers and sisters from the projects who are interested in becoming"Operating Thetans"
Maybe they can see through the BS better than Cruise or Travolta
Or maybe the going rates are a bit too high for their bank accounts.

Good, I hope so! I am having nightmares about people trapped on those bridges as the storm hit and it broke apart.

I did look at several traffic cams that night, and though I couldn't promise the times were accurate, many had light traffic while others did not.

I did see a report earlier that the "bridges were being raised" so I was hoping that was the case. I was mainly frightened by the pictures showing wrecked cars among the bridge. :(

I can understand why some people stayed, they had no way out. BUT, this was known before the storm hit. The mayor stated as much. He was willing to have them stay as was the gov. In fact it took a call from Bush to make the evac mandatory.

Now, if this had been a properly run and lead city. School buses would have been loaded up. mayor would have made it a priority to get poor people out. The airport was not being used. Gov and City could have prompted airlines to take people. There is so much that could have been done. Of course this is all hindsight talking too. We can't fix the ineptness. Hopefully other cities are watching and building proper plans.

Brings a new meaning to Vote or die.

Anyone see the Fox interview the afternoon before the hurricane hit where a minister and his wife were staying on a barrier island to “ride out the storm” so that he wouldn’t leave his community? His wife joked that she was going to stay because “he made me”. I can imagine her father’s anger.

Why do you think people won't get it if they don't see it. Would one big piles of bodies, or lots of smaller piles of dead bodies have a greater effect?

Why not just show the live people who are urinating and defecating in the streets? You can blur out their faces, and show their feces.

As long as you need to see the worst human suffering imaginable while sitting in your easy chair eating popcorn, nothing I have to say will change it. I just believe it is a sorry reflection on a civilized society.

I did hear that until they close the breach they can't even begin pumping, so questions about pumps are moot? Is there any danger of the Miss. River (which I've read is higher than the lake) overflowing because of the increased volume?

> This might easily be the largest single Bush-bash yet which is saying a lot after Rathergate. You know, I can almost smell it coming...

I have no doubt they will try. I only hope that the public perceives their nihilistic cynicism.

The Coast Guard had rescued 1,250 folks as of this morning. Unfortunately there are probably many more who are still stranded or worse.

My God.

Have not seen this before. Scarboro showing a clip of caskets upside down on a beach.

I think he is in Biloxi. They are talking about those who begged for 20 bucks prior to the storm to gat gas to leave town. Says locals are convinced they are beneath the rubble.

You know, it would actually be pretty cool if George W. Bush had the ability to control the weather. We wouldn't need a nuclear arsenal.

"Exactly who did he ask?"

The cop who was standing on that same road with him and the State Police lady (who he told exactly where he was, exit sush and such on highway whatever) who was supposed to be passing along info.

So OK lets just say Shep was too stupid to figure it out. THEN WHY IN GOD'S NAME DIDN'T THE COP OR THE SATE POLICE LADY TELL HIM? I mean if it was sooooooo damned obvious shouldn't those folks be able to help him out?
