President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Updates as they come in on Katrina

2:20 P.M. - Airport spokeswoman Michelle Duffourc: There have been hundreds of helicopter operations over the past 3 days as the helicopter are bringing in people that are being rescued from throughout the region to transfer to civilian and military aircraft to take them to points of safety.
Blanco talking about the President and supporting him! She is saying Bush has been engaged from the beginning. Blaming the people for thinking they could weather this storm, because they had done it before.
She's a Dem. Aside from her innate disability, she's lying.
Okay, got my feed back. It's for real again. Now I can see how bizarre it sounds when someone else reports it. Too unbelievable.
Sounds like it is a tedious, slow process but it is happening and has been happening thanks to a doctor who found internet access and a way to get contact to another medical person at the Superdome.
Good news is that it is occuring.
thank you for all the wonderful pix you posted earlier. I used many of them on the finest Katrina Prayer/Info thread!!
What ferry? Where? More details, please.
Here is a church in West Monroe, Louisiana, that is very involved in hurricane relief efforts in Louisiana. I trust that they will use any donations wisely: http://www.wfrchurch.org/relief/index.html
So where are they going to cash a check? Just curious - doesn't seem to make sense; Dems see everything in terms of entitlements, I guess...
My friend's home in Jackson was also wiped out and he is missing a brother and sister. I do understand what Polly is going through and pray for her, but there is nothing that can be done now so its best to sit and wait and prepare for the next few weeks rather than worry about gas for the car. Anyone alive and in healthy should be doing their best to contact the helicopters overhead for evacuation assistance or helping those that are worse off. The fact is that everyone is on their own now and there is nothing anyone can do to change immediately change that. Its time to take a frontier attitude because that is the only thing that will save anyone in the affected areas right now. I may sound cold to others, but I'm simply stating the fact. I do wish you luck Polly and hope you and all your family and friends come out of this better than those that are dead, but there is nothing you can do but to help yourself right now.
No details.
actually from before the storm hit. That won't sit well with DU.
I don't know about the Childrens Hospital
But the attack on Charity Hospital is not a rumor
Iced tea out my nose!
Col Whitehorn State Police:
Question about Baton Rouge:
We have heard the same rumors as you. Called the police chief there. Called the chief of police at LSU. Unable to substantiate any of the reports.
Came over the command Net.
The Homeland came on and said call law enforcement, this net wasn't to report crime...
I think there is still a complete breakdown in communications. Police have no command and control. Some police are getting together in small groups with no orders, but just trying to do the best they can to police the vicinity they are in.
"Our plan worked!"
"WHAT PLAN????"
