President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Alicia Acuna is reporting from Houston....and she showed some police cars...She said the police are there to make sure that the "right" people get inside the Astrodome...

Then, she said something weird (I think), she seemed to say that believe it or not the media are some "they" are watching...

Which made me realize that we haven't seen ANY pictures from inside the Superdome, have we? Everyone says how bad it is....but they didn't even video in there the first day.

NOW, she must be saying that they won't be allowed to do that at the Astrodome either...does that make sense?

Maybe if the people inside knew that they were being "watched", their behaviour MIGHT be a little bit better.

She's a democrat. How do you think they keep getting elected? They tell the same lies over and over until people begin to think it's true.

Well as long as we are NOT spreading rumors that are resulting in law enforcement rescuers NOT being able to do their job.

Is there gas in the area? IOW, are stations open? How are the neighbors doing?

Maybe someone has some in the garage they used for the lawnmower. Then you and your neighbors could make arrangements to do sort of a round robin (watching other kids, getting gas, bringing home some more in a can for another neighbor who needs enough to get to the station).

Are you close to areas where the storm wiped out areas or are you further out? Are you in a rural area?

If you are in a hard hit, but not devestated area sometimes an option might be to have the local authorities (or even your boss) take you to a job that may be considered "essential."

When we lived in Syracuse, one option for hospital employees after a blizzard would be to call the city police to transportation if you lived in the city limits. (Man, I will take an old fashioned blizzard over a hurricane any day.)

Not trying to say you have not thought of these things, but if you are like me, sometimes the brain needs a bit of a nudge after this type of experience. Best of luck to you.

Jeff was telling how some police guy gave him and his producer a police flashing light in case they needed it

He said he didn't want to use it .. but it was so bad there and so dark that they couldn't see where they were going

He said they were going down one street with the flashing light when they came upon a Ryder Truck with a couple guys in the back ..

One guy had a sawed off shoot gun .. pointed at him and yell F the police

Jeff said .. they heard a gun shot afterwards .. he isn't sure where it came from .. if it was these guys or from behind their car

Jeff said that he's been to 3rd countries that were war zones and that is what this part of NO reminded him of

He said it is an absolute mess down there

With the recent influx of dead voters, she is a shoe-in for the next election.

I'm not willing to completely agree with anything the poster writes here, but it might get you to understand the magnitude of this problem. Airlift is not the answer to taking care of a half million or more people.

I wonder if the security failue is partly caused by an unanticipated occurence- many local police were isolated, even killed by the flood.

Don't know if that's true. But something to consider.
