President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Congressman Alexander(R) - "I'm afraid that it has turned into something more than anyone could anticipate, we're going to need the military."

He needs to go talk the the Governor .. she is the one who has the powers to do that

The President can only do it if the Governor asked for the Feds help

Read the constitution, Congressman

"You just don't snap your fingers and magically make all the military people appear somewhere. Plans have to be made where to deploy them. This involves assesing where they will most be needed which first includes a damage assesment. Transportation has to be arranged, supplies have to be procured, etc. etc. etc. Don't fall for the MSM spin on this."

Thanks for the sanity and realism. I am fed up with the second-guessing and backseat driving and magical thinking that even many FReepers are indulging in.

Louisiana's laws descend from Napoleonic laws. It is much different than the rest of the country.

You mean the FReeper who suggested the warrantee's expired and it belongs to France had a point? ;-)

I'm like you...

I am thinking that the Gov and mayor of No are eating drinking, bathing, sleeping in their own beds and in comfort. Surrounded by all kinds of well meaning people...

But none of them have the slightest inkling of what to do.
That is evident.

There are people that do know!
We just hope they can get in there and take control!

CNN's Pent reporters just explained all of the details, it sounds like the military has been doing flyovers and have decided to go ahead of any state gov requests for who, where, and when, and go on their own.

Evidently the state gov officials have not communicated well on what resources and where they are needed.

It was an interesting report, did you see it?

I don't see anyone questioning the amount of the federal response except you. How fast do you think YOU could mobilize . The President declared an emergency BEFORE the hurricane. There is a massive mobilization of National Guard going on, and in case you forgot, in order to get those troops there from points north they need GASOLINE and CLEARED ROADS.

Pentagon announces that 4200 military policy are going to be deployed to New Orleans.

Are these NG or Regular units?? If I understood what I heard yesterday, in order to deploy Regulars, the President would have to declare a State of Insurrection.

Can this alert be considered a "heads-up" for that declaration?

Any historians out there know if this has ever been done before?

Where were you when it hit (the riots)

Are we talking about the Rodney King riots? If so, we were up in Victorville, and my parents lived in Torrance. I told my now ex that we WOULD go down there and get them out, if the situation continued to escalate. My parents were elderly, and Dad was undergoing chemo at the time. We had a .22 rifle and a 12g shotgun. Thank God the situation was brought under control.

That was my sister's idea as well. She had more in mind of asking a Chamber of Commerce in every city to sponsor a family, find them a job and help them get a fresh start.

Instead of busing all these people ten hours from NO, why don't they set up some work camps closer to the city and put these people to work?

I've not switched to other channels in the last hour or so- is it just me- or has there suddenly been a cut-off of live reports from NO?
