President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

I just finished a book on the depopulation of Detroit, so I got to thinking, why not move the homeless from New Orleans to Detroit.
Make the section a Enterprise Zone. The refugees will pay for the homes through sweat equity by renovating the abandoned sections of town. You get homes, jobs, refurbished section of town, and economic free enterprise zone...

If they find jewelry, televisions and Gameboys on the bus, that may be a clue...
It's an Orleans Parish bus. That's NOLA. These are refugees. No food, no water, no home, flooding, roaming gangs, no information, thousands and thousands and thousands of wandering refugees in similar dire straits. Can you honestly say that you wouldn't take such a chance to get out, especially if you have family? There were children in that group.
However, there is a decent chance that a bus with keys was hijacked. That is a problem. But this isn't a simple cut and dry issue. As far as they knew, these people were facing death. Given the difficulty in getting enough troops and resources into the city, can you really say you wouldn't be scared to death that you wouldn't survive without taking drastic action?

They are running the policing from Baton Rouge...that is how screwed up the city has become.
Go thru a Cat 5 and don't sleep for days and see you perky you and your hair look. Some of you are really raisin' my hairs here.
Do you have this scanner (N.O.) also? I am going to refrain from posting more details on what I'm hearing now - too sensitive, scary stuff - realizing "loose lips" could be in play (which is a freaking shame when all we should be doing is rescuing people, not having to fight a war with urban thug criminals) . . .
maybe mayor sohuld give them all the buses they need to evac themselves, seems liek they are mor ethan capable of doing it, at a faster rate too.
That would alleviate a lot of the looting.
Oh, but where would they go you ask? Well where does anyone go right now? Where did all the fortunate people who had cars go?
Wherever they go, they'll find plenty of Texans willing to help. As long as they are good to their host. I am certain of this.
While trending carefully, a group of La. Freepers, could rehash the unending series of criminality that has plagued the Orleans Levee Board for the last several decades. The same people who delayed the evacuation order are involved in the Orleans Levee Board corruption.
The entire political machine of NO should be routed out in the publics' forum. La. won't see this level of national and internatinoal scrutiny for a long time after this.

The people who showed up around Shep were dehydrated, hungry and in shock. A black man asked for someone just to tell him which way to go for help. They were law abiding citizens. They stayed in their homes until it became obvious no one was coming, not even a helicopter flew over. He said the rescuers have megaphones, and that they should use them to give directions. They want to cooperate. These people are in shock, not lazy or shiftless.

Fox has been better in their coverage over the past day. But, if you can tune out the commie propaganda, CNN has actually been on the ball with this story.

I fear some people might be further reluctant to evacuate because they now know that, at least in downtown New Orleans, whatever a storm and water don't take - thieves will. More might choose to stay and protect/defend their rights and property. I hope I'm wrong.
Some that were interviewed, according to the CNN reporter, admitted that they weren't in the dome. That's when he got suspicious and started asking questions.
