President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Thanks. I believe they've been called - can verify in a minute - and we're waiting to see what happens. There is so much emergency traffic that it might take a while.

Sorry, my reply was insensitive. You can buy a gun safe like this to prevent anyone but you having access to a handgun you purchase.

They look like people.... and little kids.

Okay. Saw the interview with that guy. It looked dubious. I also heard "renegade bus" and made the logical leap that there was something amiss. Doesn't sound like anyone knows what the hell that was all about.

"Wouldn't you be resourceful in such a dire situation?"

Resourceful???

How about criminal, or unethical, or just plain wrong?

No. I do not do things like that. I would hope you would not, either.

I saw that too. I was aghast. I told my 16 yo daughter and even she was aghast.

"Do you think your city was prepared?"

"Well we told them to leave."

It doesn't get much more ludicrous than this, and I believe this says it all about her leadership abilities.

All major cities that have policies in place to encourgage "white flight". Those are ones you cited. Rich white people move to suburbs away from the inner-city. The poor are just a inconvenience to the ring cities. Kind of sad actually.

People, a nation is measured by how it treats it's poorest and those most in need. Many of the poor people who were not evac before the strom hit are the poorest people New Orleans has to offer. We have to be good citizens and help them out. Don't make assumptions about people. I bet you would be surprised at how you acted when you were on a verge of desperation and a camera caught you. Butfor some reason it seems ok to disparage a lot of these people just because they are black and poor. That is how I am seeing it. Not right. Not very Christ like either.

The meek shall inherit the earth.

Glad you're starting to hear from your family.

I've got several families arriving tomorrow. Found my Slidell relatives and even my stubborn uncles were coaxed into evacuating at the last minute. They're all in Texas and perhaps three of those families might come here too. Not too many beds but lots of floor and air mattresses.

Found the location of my mom - she's in the hospital in Metairie. By the time I found out it was too late to have my call transferred to her room (yep, phones are working in Metairie - just no water the operator said). Will call her first thing in the am.

Only other relatives missing are my brother and sister and I know for a fact they evacuated - just don't know to where yet.

no, i think LA, NY or Chicago without a meal would last, but take away the AC, water and communications for 24 hours and it could easily take on the appearance of Somalia

On Fox there was a reporter talking about how they had released prisoners from the jails. Wonder if any of them will end up at the Astrodome?

He got banned for posting a quote from an accredited reporter? If it is real (albeit d@mn horrible) it should be postable. If the data is wrong, then the thread would reflect that.

I don't get it.
