Weber sat among hundreds of refugees rescued Tuesday from rooftops, attics and floating debris in the 9th Ward and St. Bernard Parish by an armada of more than 100 boats. Officials from the Coast Guard estimated they pulled thousands of people off of rooftops and attics, many with stories as grim as Webers. Officials believed hundreds and maybe thousands more remained in peril. They declined to estimate the number of dead. That will come later.

Then, in an evening press conference, Mayor Ray Nagin announced that the already crippled city would take yet another blow: Another surge of water from the failed 17th Street Canal levee that could push an additional 10 feet of water into already waterlogged neighborhoods and possibly flood the remaining dry sections of Uptown.

Uptown resident Keith Williams started his own security patrol, driving around in his Ford pickup with his newly purchased handgun. Earlier in the day, Williams said he had seen the body of a gunshot victim near the corner of Leonidas and Hickory streets.
"What I want to know is why we dont have paratroopers with machine guns on every street," Williams said.
Like-minded Art Depodesta sat on the edge of a picnic table outside Cooter Browns Bar, a chrome shotgun at his side loaded with red shells.
"They broke into the Shell station across the street," he said. "I walked over with my 12-gauge and shot a couple into the air."
The looters scattered, but soon after, another man appeared outside the bar in a pickup truck armed with a pistol and threatened Depodesta.
"I told him, Listen, I was in the Army and I will blow your ass off," Depodesta said. "Weve got enough trouble with the flood."

Christ.
It's like The Day After Tomorrow, Dawn of the Dead, and Escape From L.A. all rolled into one and made reality.
"In Uptown, one the few areas that remained dry, a bearded man patrolled Oak Street near the boarded-up Maple Leaf Bar, a sawed-off shotgun slung over his shoulder. The owners of a hardware store sat in folding chairs, pistols at the ready.

The man sped away."
If we didn't have the 2nd Amendment, things would be much worse in New Orleans.
And I think it was today the idiotic Governor said the drinking water was clean. Janet from another Planet.
Listening to the Mayor and Governor on various news programs, it is clear they have not talked to each other.
They each said things that contradicted each other; for instance:
1) The Super Dome would have to be evacuated soon;
2) The people in the SD would have to stay a week;
3) The people in the SD would have to stay for several weeks;
4) That the Army Corp of Engineers didn't show up in time and so the levee couldn't be repaired;
5) That the Army Corp of Engineers did show up in time but repairing the levee didn't work.
There's more, but you get the idea. The lack of leadership is astonishing. And these people have been on television and radio all night and the people who need them cannot hear them.
They need to stay off the airwaves, meet at a command center with FEMA and the Red Cross and get their act together. People are stuck in attics and dying as I type this.
Free flowing liquor and complaining about the government? That doesn't sound like a Third World refugee camp but New Orleans before the flood.
They have a way with words in Nawlins.
At least that have a couple heroes there, who aren't helplessly whining and waiting for the Experts/Authorities to save them.
regarding the looting: who will defend an unarmed citizen if the government is incapable? < /rhetorical question.>
This is just practice for what is yet to come. The Earth's magnetic pole is shifting at an ever increasing rate. This means that a large amount of spinning metal in the Earth's core is precessing, wobbling, or whatever. There are going to be major earth changes within the next 10 years or so. It is time to check your kit and re-examine your escape routes.
The Mob Rules.
Very sad day for this country.
Anybody hear waht happened to the all shrimpers riding it out in their boats in a cove?
Stunning
Good question, but in the meantime, seems like armed civilians are keeping the peace. Imagine what it would be like to not have any weapon at all.
I saw the idiot State AG of Louisiana (Charles Foti) he was almost giddy about the looting----- couldn't care less- despicable- SHOOT LOOTERS ON SIGHT!!!!
still dead
At first the media acted like this storm wasn't that bad.
With the water rising from the breeched levees, of what value are the Nikes and video games they looted. Darwinism at its finest...stay and steal, not find a way to get to higher ground and safety.
I have a question for those "in the know"....
The US government has been spending big bucks on advertising the need for flood insurance. Yet how many people without flood insurance will still get a payout from the Federal Government?
And if they do, what was the point of flood insurance?
And yes, I know that flood insurance can be very expensive - especially when you live in a city that is 12 feet BELOW sea level, that is located between a major lake, the largest River in North America, and the OCEAN. Duh....
Oh my lord. They failed to drop the sandbags because someone dropped the ball?
Sigh. This is a nightmare.
Still waiting for the first pledge of monetary assistance from the rest of the world.
