The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Aren't there cruises that go to and from NO, also. Wonder what's happening with that...

Read or heard this morning that there is no information if the CHANNEL is even open on the river. Seems it is constantly being dredged to keep it open in normal times - how much silt may have shifted with this storm?

You're right, I just googled New Orleans cruise ships and apparently it's quite the thriving port. So where are the ships?

Yes, that is so very sad and so hard to watch. Awful. And what is worse is the reality that it has happened thousands and millions of times in disasters all over the world, that weren't on TV. But am still holding out hope for his wife, there are many, many amazing stories of how people survived.

So New Orleans is basically like the Netherlands? Way under sea level, but without the benefit of windmills?

Now there's a thought. The new New Orleans can run on windmill power. Would it work?

It can't be as easy as it sounds - if it's not done right, the force of the water will cause more damage to the levee and may enlarge it.

There has to be a school of experience on thisw - even the dutch had a boy to stick something in the dyke.

And the Russians were able to dump a gazillion tons of lead and concrete on Chernobyl.

I think the problem might get worse as the back of the dykes get saturated with water and the footing lets go.

I hope this is not some perverse urban planning

It's unclear that any ship could get up to New Orleans; there's been massive channel shifting and siltation.

What, no swiftboats can make it out to a ship? Heck, I'm just speculatin' & wishing something/anything could help.

How would your city fare if it had no radio system, no cell phones or landlines, no power, water or internet?

the gov and mayor. They act like they

Please don't start with that. Sorry to knock holes in your theory but if it's God doing it to punish, he also destroyed a place in MS called 'Pass Christian' and also demolished all of the churches.

What kind of draft do cruise ships have? Is it too deep for the river? I've been reading here that some barges can't navigate the river any longer due to the silt.

They'd have to stay further out in the Gulf. There would be the problem of shuttling NOers out to them, but there would be accomodations, water, power, food, and reasonable medical care once they could get there.

I;m sure they have older ships they don't really use anymore. Where DO they keep retired cruise ships anyway?

The ships would have been diverted - maybe to the Eastern or Southern Caribbean. That's why Caribb. cuises are the cheapest this time of year -- never know if you're going to get the itinerary you signed up for or not. They go where the hurricanes aren't.

What's happened to Fox lately. They're starting to scare me.

They don't scare me one bit, they're just a disappointment in times like this.
