The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

You are right. I have called Gov Blano's office. I told them the situation on that bridge and they need help NOW. I e-mailed Pres Bush. I have to try and do something folks. I can hardly bear this.

I just can't fathom it. This is becoming bigger than 9/11, if that were possible.

In terms of loss, I think you are right. In terms of agent of harm, there is obviously a world of difference, and the long-term reaction is completely different as a result.

Yes it is, it's more comparable to the Tsunamis in Asia, albeit on a smaller scale, but to the people in the path, they face the exact same reality.

I watched a lot of that coverage and in the immediate aftermath, I recall the natives helping with the rescue and clean-up..... they weren't looting the hotels. It's just disgraceful. The looters and thugs are probably the main reason help couldn't get in to NO sooner.

Food and water is starting to arrive at the Superdome. They showed a truckload of water about an hour ago.....

Just now..amazing. Becoming all to clear that the LA elected officials had no idea what they were doing, unbelievably sad....I expect we will see a huge improvement in the next 24 hours now that Feds have taken over....1.5 days of delays....just freaking unbelievable in a post 9-11 world...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hurricane Katrina is likely to have only a modest impact on the U.S. economy as long as the hit to the energy sector proves transitory, White House economic adviser Ben Bernanke said on Wednesday.

That was predictable...it must be like the twilight zone in there.

I know we've mentioned it previously...but the veneer of civilization is mighty thin..

It's not that far. If they have buses they can start evacuating those people.

I think the city of Houston should send all of their school and city buses to NO and pick up people. If they clear the roads for the convoy, they can be there in 5 or 6 hours.

I'm not minimizing the scope of this by any means, but after today's federal press conference, I got the sense that "help is on the way" (ala Cheney during the 2000 election).

IMO everyone of them who are looting (unless for necessities) and doing the violence should be harshly punished. All that energy and ability to get around, they should be putting into helping their neighbors and their fellow citizens. Think of all the good they could have done instead! Despicable!! and Shameful!!

Every time I go into the break room to see what I can see on this, some of the idiots around here have switched the TV to CNBC. Frankly, Scarlett, I really don't care right now about what stocks to invest in to make the most money off Katrina. Morons. I'd take CNN at this point over CNBC.

Grr.

"I'm wondering if we will see congressional hearings over all this incompetence,"

No -- what we need is an "impartial, bipartisan" Commission.

I mean, the last one worked out so well, and all....

I know that freeper Gulfcoast6 has not been heard from; he lives not far from the coast of Mississippi and evacuated to a sheriff's department/jail inland...but not very far inland. We are very worried about him.
