The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

The announcements that the water level was equalized with the lake and was no longer rising it actually great news. It means that water is not coming in from the river. Or, at least, the water from the river is not having a significant impact. The river level is higher than the lake.

Well if you do the math, if approx 100,000 did not evacuate, there are about 13,000 in the SD, after about 3000 have been rescued off rooftops, maybe 10,000 are roaming loose, where are the rest of them?

The perception is out there, however wrong it is, that Bush is in bed with the oil companies.
He had better have someone looking hard and fast at some of these price increases and bringing out federal prosecution for any involved in hiking prices without merit.

The two-week relaxation is totally insufficient, but it will buy time to explain the issue to the American public

And it will also relax restrictions on the transport of existing stocks to various places, which will reduce the likelihood of local shortages.

I agree; people are going to say it anyway, so let's have Bush put the arm to those people, ya know, his friends........LOL.

I didn't want to bring that up. But, you are right. I think the number who did not leave was even higher than 100,000. Initially, 40,000 homes were under water. We also have no reports from Plaquemines and we've heard St Bernard was "gone." With the potential for loss of life in MS this is not looking good.

We're closing military bases ..why not build refineries there?

Sounds like a terrific idea in many ways -- would replace the jobs lost through the closing. But the main reason they're not being build, as I understand it, is the environmentalists who, if they can't stop them outright, tie them up with so much permitting, environmental impact statements, legal suits, etc. that it's not worth it.

Now if they could exempt federal property from environmental obstructionism . . .

An oil rig that broke loose during Hurricane Katrina is wedged under the Cochrane Bridge in Mobile, Alabama. The rig tore free of its moorings as the storm lashed the Alabama coast before surging downriver and smashing into the suspension bridge.

SCARY! So are the photos with piles of matchsticks AKA housing.

With Departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, Defense, etc. the President has set in motion the most effective response that is possible. This evening is the right time to address the nation. Air Force one is landing at Andrews right now.
