The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Chertoff press conference...

DHS has taken over control of operations for relief using some new law - first time law has been used - something like "Incidence of National Significance".

Just came in from the shop and saw this thread:

'Destruction here is worse than the tsunami' (S. Mississippi)

-snip-

Kim Riseth is one of those journalists. He works for a newspaper in Norway but is based in New York City. He has covered the war in Iraq, as well as the tsunami in Sri Lanki.

He and a photographer flew to Florida on Monday and droveto South Mississippi early Tuesday to write about the damage wrought by Katrina.

Riseth found his way to the Harrison County Courthouse after walking around surveying damage for several hours.

"The destruction here is worse than the tsunami," Riseth said at the Emergency Management Agency. "It's exactly the same thing I saw in Sri Lanka. The houses were smaller and not as strong as the ones here, but this place is totally destroyed about three blocks from the beach."

-snip-

Authority for four devastated states (including Florida) will have fuel standards removed temporarily during this crisis.

Per FNC and federal authorities now.

Perhaps there is a need for footwear amongst the refugees. I saw one picture of two small girls being offloaded from a helicopter. One girl was missing a flipflop. She needs a pair of shoes.

Walk through that kind of water, and it'll suck the sneakers right off your feet. Let's just decide that these policewomen are trying to help out the victims, and not stocking up on cheap azz dress shoes for themselves.

Yes. Let's get that loopy mayor out of the way and let that dud Blanco hide under her blanket. Encouraging to see the military move in. Looks like Bush is the only one who has done anything about this since Saturday.

IOW, no requirements for local blends for a while? That's excellent news. Somebody's thinking the right logistical thoughts.
