The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

These gangs don't have a clue what's going on outside the city and that they can't get out with the stuff - amazing really amazing - boy, is civilization a thin veneer

Okay, I take back my wish that those looting just to steal drown.

Fire ants. Large balls of fire ants, down their pants ten seconds before they realize they're there. Then they can drown.

OK, that's huge (and hugh). The last I saw their website, they had no ETA for getting MSY up and running again. If the highways between Kenner and New Orleans are passable, they'll finally have an ability to begin to deliver large-scale aid in, and get people out.

Wasn't it the Salvation Army and the Red Cross after 9-11 who had money "distribution" problems?

The Red Cross, NOT, I repeat, NOT the Salvation Army were the "thieves" during the Sept. 11 recovery. The Salvation Army is (shhh, don't tell anyone) a church organization.

Salvation Army is the charity we picked too.

Also their CEO's are not paid huge salaries like some of the charities, and you won't find them on TV touting their own worth at every opportunity (it seems to me news coverage where Red Cross officials are interviewed is turning into one big commercial for the Red Cross.)

I think we have a news blackout of anything the Feds are doing on the ground -- can you say I don't trust the media?

Anything to make Bush look inept.

Wouldn't it be very interesting if a forced detox got a whole bunch of them off of the junk? It's hard to see blessings in all of this, but that could be one.

boy, is civilization a thin veneer

I've said it before on these threads: I'm not so sure that these particular folks have been "civilized" at all. I would be surprised if 10% of these looters had grown up with a father in the house.

I don't know about you, but if were a resident of St. Charles Parish, and I found looters in my house, I'd shoot them on sight.

Were the looters in St. Charles Parish or on St. Charles Street in New Orleans? I didn't even know there *was* a St. Charles Parish.

Just had a thought... I bet there's some drug addicts out there in serious detox. Nowhere to get their "fix".

Bummer...... put some ice on it.

I'm sure this has been discussed, but they have GOT TO GET THE PEOPLE OFF THE OVERPASS!!! This is crazy! LA officials, especially NO ones, are acting as if they are surprised the damn place flooded. What the hell is going on?!?!

Too bad there's no ice with the power out. They can't even do that.

This really brings home the scale of what we're talking about here, from WWL's blog (which has been GREAT):

"9:46 A.M. - CNN: Commercial flights coming out of New Orleans International Airport could resume in two months."

TWO MONTHS before commercial flights could leave MSY. Wow.
