The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

I just saw the 17th canal street breach on TV.
Certainly looks to me that the water is running OUT of the residential area into the canal.

Must be coming in somewhere else.

Road openings should be posted by the MS Highway Patrol. However, I tried their website www.dps.state.ms.us/dps/dps.nsf/Divisions/hp; it seems the entire MS gov website is down.

Would also try MEMA - Mississippi Emergency Management Agency: 1-800-222-MEMA or http://www.msema.org (this site is jammed too)

MEMA will know where the generators can best be used (e.g. shelters).

Hearing on Fox news that the cost in the beginning was
low ball numbers, now it gets higher insured/uninsured
????? Anybody want to venture into that..again on Fox
so do not scream at me..this is worse than 911 and the
4 Florida's hurricanes combined.

They mentioned 40 billion in uninsured.

Where do they go? Where are they taking the baskets full of clothes and games???

I'm sure that they have staked out high ground; second or third floor spaces where they are hoarding their booty. When the true evacuation occurs, the looters, for the most part will try to stay, ignoring the official calls to leave. At that point, many of them will likely die off; victims of their own incompetence, of nature, or finally of starvation. After the evacuation, the NG can grab them as they pop up, as anyone left who is not with the relief effort is there for looting and should be tossed in the hoosegow (or more preferentially shot).

The sheriff in Biloxi made more sense to me this morning -- he went on local radio there and said, "We've got a jail. It's got no power, it's hot, it's uncomfortable and it's already full. I've got no problem with stacking more folks in there, even in the hallways if I have to. You loot, I'm gonna put you in there. Period."

I haven't posted it, but my thoughts are exactly what you just said.

The New Orleans and Louisiana "leaders" appear clueless and overwhelmed. I can understand being physically overwhelmed with too much water but they appear to have no direction and no way to put plans into action. It appears they had no real plan of action in case this happened.

Last night, the NO Mayor told Larry King that they were not "overwhelmed". I guess he hasn't seen the wholesale looting while NO police stand there and watch them.

FOr the life of me, I cannot understand why the Mayor is not pushing hard the total evacuation of the city. That should be the NUMBER ONE priority of everything else right now.

1 - Save lives.
2 - Prevent disease by evacuating populace.
3 - Secure the city and prevent unauthorized entry.

Those things have NOTHING to do with fixing the breaches in the levees. The Corps of Engineers and city officials charged with the Levees can work that seperately.

Today, I start a blog for info. Yesterday, I couldn't, but today it's time to get to work.

Pray and pass the relief information. Pray and look for survivors. Pray and gather resources. That's what we should be doing.

Mayor of NO on CNN now. Communications not working, cell phonesnot working, batteries dead on radios, e-mail not wowrking properly.

That was taped. CNN saying people are asking "what are the plans?" Apparently it isn't just people on FR who are wondering about that.

And I expect he's not going to be overly concerned about bruises on the prisoners, either. Nor am I, I suppose.
