The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

> Just where do the looters think they are going to haul the loot to? Sounds like they'd rather die rich & stupid. In a boat, car? Do they think the cops are gonna help them tote their stuff?

Reminds me of the pirates who went down, with all the gold still strapped to their bodies. They sure died "rich."

Or of the kid who gets caught stealing from the cookie jar because he refuses to let go of the handful of cookies, even though his cookie-filled hand is now too large to extract through the mouth of the jar

I have been critical of her but it appears that with the largest national diaster in US history that alot of things that was planned and implemnted is going well. There are some postive notes of how the paln is working Lets give her the benefit of the doubt for a little bit

I pray the NG and needed equipement to evacuate people and to establish and maintain order during it, gets in there within the next 12-18 hours.

I'm not an expert and I'm not there, but from what I've seen on television, there are people trapped everywhere in the city. They may have supplies (if they can get to them) for another day or two. The liquids are the most important thing, of course.

But there's no way to do a door to door search with boats in a city of that size in a couple of days. It simply can't be done, and there's no way to tell which houses belong to people who evacuated and who didn't.

Since it's a given that the water can't be pumped out of the city for several weeks if all goes well, what we are almost certainly going to hear for many weeks is a rising death toll from New Orleans as each home is finally re-entered.

Maybe there's some slim hope that people trapped in the upper floor or attic can break through the roof in the next day or two, but my guess is that the strongest and most able have already done that.

The only other hope is that more people evacuated than we think.

"Maggie Thatcher would have been good."

Thatcher--a great leader!

But Blanco is doing her best. This would be a tough situation for anyone. Even at 9/11 strong male leaders were crying and wiping tears, very emotional. So I don't blame her for that.

She may be over her head in this situation, as the Mayor seems to be also. In fact, from the interviews I've seen, she shows more leadership than the Mayor does....

We all can dictate pretty well behind these computers :)

>You know, those new-fangled floating buses.<

Ironically, there is a helicopter and tv crew touring the destruction. They panned over a huge number of submerged school busses.

I really, really hope they can find some way to get the folks in the Superdome out.

There has been so much water driven into the area by the hurricane that it may indeed take a while for the lake, normally at sea level, to come back down to sea level.

I heard her say "We're trying to figure out what to do" in regards to how to get people out of the Superdome.

Talk about instilling confidence.

"I do not believe I could dam a 20 foot wide creek, of a three foot depth and a walking pace flow rate, even with unlimited funds and preparation, without unwatering the site. "

I guess you do alot of govt work. :-)

Seriously, we have a creek that is exactly 30 ' wide and 2-3' deep. It feeds a raceway that supplies a pond.

There is 3' of water to feed the raceway there only because of a dam made of bank run stone that we have to repile after every major storm. Its amazing what 3 men and a boy can do in one hour and as this
is a trout production stream - it runs fast and cold."

Have at it.

Grab a chopper or a boat and close the door.

Stop by here, and pick me up on your way.

I'm a sucker for lost causes.

I'd give my left one to be fighting that breach right now anyway, but you should know, the mayor ordered everyone out.

I'm assuming that "everyone" means everyone, including law enforcement.

I think we're past plugging holes.

THe Dutch had a storm in 1953 that breeched dikes and killed thousands - They have developed incredible technologies for breakwaters since then.

We are reinventing the wheel.
