The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

So right, it is like a slow motion emerging hell. I cannot even respond to the new bad news. I have given up on NO but then I don't know if that is right or not. Maybe an heroic effort to plug those levees. It just seems too horrible.

But, truth be told: Every time President Bush takes charge, I exhale and know the best solution is at hand.

That has been my experience. The best situation is a quick flood with waters disappearing quickly. Some of the framing always has to be replaced as it simply cannot be recovered.
We had a good number people sandbag their homes, not to keep them from flooding, but to eliminate the current and it seemed to work pretty well.
For those of you who think these are small things indeed, you tend to get real practical, real fast when the waters begin lapping at your home.
Ignore the idiot Paula Zhan who just said the failure to fix the breach will add an additional 12-15' of floodwaters to New Orleans. Nonsense, the truth is that it is predicted to now flood to about 3' above sea level, submerging areas that sit 9-12' below sea level.
And this is what's been nagging on me through the whole thing. The officials (Governor, Mayor) act as though they had no idea that something like this might happen. There were living in "la la land" or in a total state of denial not to have plans in place for a levee break, even if it was a Cat 1 storm.
Almost lost? I don't know anymore.

The problem of erosion loss is easily fixable IF the will can be generated to do so. All that is necessary is to cut an east-west channel across the Mississippi Isthmus and stop the flow of silt from dropping over the edge of the "continental abyss" as it does now.

Jeff Goldblatt on Fox just said that water is still rising in the French Quarter and it is now knee deep there.
FYI, guess what, sandbagging the lake failed.
I was afraid that would happen.
You can't expect some bags to hold back a lake.
That just upsets me so much.
Praise God for that at least.
