Looters take advantage of New Orleans' flooding (It is a Free for All)

NEW ORLEANS — With much of the city flooded by Hurricane Katrina, looters floated garbage cans filled with clothing and jewelry down the street in a dash to grab what they could.

In some cases, looting today took place in full view of police and National Guard troops.

At a Walgreen's drug store in the French Quarter, people were running out with grocery baskets and coolers full of soft drinks, chips and diapers.

When police finally showed up, a young boy stood in the door screaming, "86! 86!" — the radio code for police — and the crowd scattered.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.

"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

One man, who had about 10 pairs of jeans draped over his left arm, was asked if he was salvaging things from his store.

"No," the man shouted, "that's EVERYBODY'S store."

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

Mike Franklin stood on the trolley tracks and watched the spectacle unfold.

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

A man walked down Canal Street with a pallet of food on his head. His wife, who refused to give her name, insisted they weren't stealing from the nearby Winn-Dixie supermarket. "It's about survival....

Just like they swam to the stores to loot? You're not making sense, you should quit while you're only a little behind.

Didn't look like they were swimming to the stores to loot? Did it look like they were swimming to you? Do Geography classes in Atlanta teach you that all areas are flat and hold equal amounts of water?

Oh sure, Denise, like they wouldn't be looting in Philadelphia, cradle of fine manners and decorum.

LOL, maybe they would, but there would already be some dead looters, guaranteed.

Wow, that post went entirely over your head. I'm going to turn around and talk to my office wall now. It'll be a much more intelligent conversation.

If your wall doesn't get bored that is fine by me. You're just steamed because you have no idea what is going on in NO and you were called on it. I would like to see you take Granny and the kids for a swim to the shelter next time you get a flood in Atlanta. Be sure and get pictures of that.

He'll have to drink it fast before it gets warm, or he drownds. How can you begrudge him it? It's worthless to the store owner, with an utterly ruined store anyway. Maybe it's the smile on his face that belies the percieved thought: "gee I wishes it would hurricane every day so's I could steal freeeee beer." </sarcasm>

Gee--do you think this is the reason these poor downtrodden maggots refused the order to evacuate?
Now because they ignored a lawful order they are free to steal anything that isn't nailed down.

"Looting at all times, but particularly WHEN A STATE OF EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED, should be treated as though MARTIAL LAW had been declared = SHOT ON SIGHT!"

Oh man..shoot the 10 yr old black kids who shouted "86!"? Ive lived here for 35 yrs and can tell you there would be another civil war if even a teenager were shot. No need to give the Dems ammo. It would be just what they need.

Good afternoon.
"LA riots with water.."

I haven't seen anyone in NOLA beating people because of their race or burning stores just for giggles.

So far most the looting that has been shown on TV has been of products that are not going to survive the water and heat for long anyway. Guns have been taken but the looters who took them are going to play hell getting them out of the city during the evacuation.

The a$$holes who took items that don't contribute to their survival just might not survive.

The next couple of weeks will be interesting to watch.
