Looters take advantage of New Orleans' flooding (It is a Free for All)

NEW ORLEANS — With much of the city flooded by Hurricane Katrina, looters floated garbage cans filled with clothing and jewelry down the street in a dash to grab what they could.

In some cases, looting today took place in full view of police and National Guard troops.

At a Walgreen's drug store in the French Quarter, people were running out with grocery baskets and coolers full of soft drinks, chips and diapers.

When police finally showed up, a young boy stood in the door screaming, "86! 86!" — the radio code for police — and the crowd scattered.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.

"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

One man, who had about 10 pairs of jeans draped over his left arm, was asked if he was salvaging things from his store.

"No," the man shouted, "that's EVERYBODY'S store."

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

Mike Franklin stood on the trolley tracks and watched the spectacle unfold.

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

A man walked down Canal Street with a pallet of food on his head. His wife, who refused to give her name, insisted they weren't stealing from the nearby Winn-Dixie supermarket. "It's about survival....

>"However, what we're discussing is whether one race is more predisposed to looting than another. I would say that the notion is nonsense and readily dismissed by history."

Actually, we are not discussing that. We are discussing something called US History.

There have been more than 170 incidents of primarily Black looting in the US in the last 70 years. Riots, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.

With the exception of the 1006 SF earthquake and the radicals at some so-called Peace demonstrations, and the 1968 Dem convention, where were the White looters?

I agree with you completely. It is not a matter of predisposition. It is a matter of choice.

Is this a story of the Grasshopper and the Ants?

are these people Grasshoppers who were playing around and celebrating while the storm was approaching?

or

were they ants who stored food and supplies in anticipation of the storm.

Seriously folks, how many days supplies are we told to stockpile? What kind of hysteria is the MSM whipping up by telling people it will be MONTHS before power comes back and weeks before the flood waters receed. Is the MSM following the "bleeds it leads" doctrine by creating panic to find viewers? What is that one AM station broadcasting?

Beer is the safest thing to drink....it is mostly water.
I don't begrudge someone entering a store for beer, water or food for survival....but just like the LA riots...they try to justify it by saying they are "oppressed".

I agree. The legitimate explanation for swiping a case of beer is "I'm thirsty, the water is filled with s***, and the store I looted was out of bleach, soda, and bottled water."

BTW - how much of that food will not be covered by insurance because it cannot be proved to have been in inventory?

If I ran a grocery store chain, and I found out after something like this that my insurance policy didn't cover a standard inventory level as a matter of course, my legal department would be out looking for new jobs before close of business.

LA lacked the will to put the LAPDs hi tech dreck to use. Old fashioned methods would have stopped the carnage.

How many days of supplies were people told to have? Three days? a week?

What are people NOW told they will need?

Excellent points.

And your storage anecdote reminds me of how people here in MD go nuts hearing about a "snow storm". LOL. Snow here almost never amounts to much, and usually melts in a few days as is, but you'd think suddenly we were being transformed into NW Territory the way people just HAVE to go to the store and buy up things....

Come on! They ain't going to be stuck in the house for weeks on end; no way. I can't believe these people don't have enough food to last 1 day of shut-in.

At least they're buying them and not just STEALING, tho!

New Orleans will always be a great city. However, it has its share of criminal and low life elements like Detroit. In other words, just so that DNC Chairman Howard Dean gets the message, the vermin that elected the city leadership are known as Democrats, and it's they who never worked a day in their lives. Look at their Mayor on TV. The poor fellow is lost, and so is the Governor. The voters of Louisiana should be ashamed.

Hmm.. Well, I may've misconstrued your earlier comments. If you don't mind, explain what you mean by "it's a matter of choice." A choice made by whom, why?

PS. Although, it's worth noting that my original post to you was meant to say that if the population of New Orleans was 90% white right now, then the looters would be white.
