Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

They're saying on WDSU that the water will continue to rise until the water on both sides of the levee are equal.
Wow, I wonder if this is really what's going to happen? Can they fix the levee?
Nobody was stuck. Tourists could have gotten cars to leave, could have gotten a plane before the airport closed, could have gone into the superdome. If they had legs and a brain then they could have walked from the Quarter to the dome.
I do not make a practice of making requests like this, but conditions warrant such a request. I am office bound and unable to watch TV accounts, (and they don't seem to be doing the job anyway), but I'll ask you to help me.
Our corporate headquarters is in CDT New Orleans close to the Hyatt. Any news or factual info you obtain, that's confirmable with a source (newslink, etc., not hearsay) regarding the status of the situation in New Orleans and surrounding areas (Slidell, Kenner, Metarie, West Bank, etc.), would be greatly appreciated. I and my coworkers in the office are greatly concerned and troubled for our many, many friends and family down their, and we're not able to get much new info on the apparent degradation of conditions happening this morning.
I've read through this thread up to 500 or so, but anything new that you find out, please ping me directly. I may not can respond to many of you, but any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Lastly, pray for all these folks affected by Katrina. They need all the help they can get. Thanks. - OB1
I don't know. Transport Helo's? Chinooks are they?
You have to remember Brian Williams woke America up yesterday stating New Orleans had dodged the bullet. Of course, no one will remember that during his retirement dinner.
Thank you.
What about in north La. coming in from I 20? My kids are still w/out power in Jackson and were going to try to come here (eastTx) this week...thanks

Thanks,,
I recall following 9/11, here in Little Rock, Firemen were standing on street corners, holding out their boots collecting money for the victims.
I'm hoping to see that again. We'll give as much as we can anyway.

You know, I don't care about the looting in this instance. These people are in survival mode now. It's going to be survival of the fittest. Natural instinct. Nobody can say what they would do in such a situation. God help them all.
I think this was a CAT5 at landfall not in terms of Windspeed but storm surge and pressure. Windspeeds were CAT4 easily.
They just said everyone in the city should leave, and Crescent City connection is the only way to leave.
T-P EVACUATING
Tuesday, 9:40 a.m.
The Times-Picayune is evacuating it's New Orleans building.
Water continues to rise around our building, as it is throughout the region. We want to evaucate our employees and families while we are still able to safely leave our building.
Our plan is to head across the Mississippi River on the Pontchartrain Expressway to the west bank of New Orleans and Jefferson Parish. From there, we'll try to head to Houma.
Our plan, obviously, is to resume providing news to our readers ASAP. Please refer back to this site for continuing information as soon as we are able to provide it.
Highly unlikely. The power grid will liekly be shut down in these areas, and the safety grounding system should default those transformers not isolated.
I think the Jerk of the Week contest is over,
however,
I believe a new one is starting tomorrow. :)
There are scattered reports that the US 90 bridge has been destroyed - only pilings left.
Quote: You've heard of the term getting bombed back to the Stone Age? New Orleans is getting flooded back to the Stone Age.
Agree but this is not the stone age. These people will not starve to death. Help is on it's way. Most of these people will be picked up in 1-2 days max.
My point is the US has contingincies for this and help is on it's way. These people may miss 2-3 meals at most.
