Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

On the other hand, I'm from the South and I do like most blacks I've met. I have Southern friends who are not biggots

Absolutely.

Just drove to Indy and back to take cousin to the airport....Lots of rain, some wind ...More crazy drivers than any thing....Why would the occupant of the black car think he could drive 75+ in a fifty-five zone and not end up crashing into something?...Prayers for him and the folks in the car he hit.

The mayor and gov should not only have ordered mandatory evacs on Saturday morning, but mandatory immediate shutdown of nonessential businesses, to emphasize the seriousness of the situation.

The mayor had already sent his family out of New Orleans by the Saturday morning news conference. His family was safe and he knew he'd never end up in a shelter.

I'm wondering if -- by the time this is all over -- they will let the river and Ponchartrain take their natural course and rebuild in another location... you can only hold back the natural course of nature for so long before she takes control.

If today's spike persists, the economy is going to feel it.

I know, I'm going to get my bicycle up to specs. tonight.

Speaking of levees...why had no one bothered to fix/improve/raise/etc them over the years? Too busy I guess with Mardis Gras and all...

Our prayers with all those who are suffering.

The looters are despicable, but they can be dealt with in time. Eventually there will be nowhere to hide for them, and the allies in crime will betray each other to save themselves.

Have faith.

WWL-TV just now reported that Slidell is as bad as the worst of New Orleans. Last I heard downtown Slidell was under 15 feet of water.

Last I knew, no-one had heard a peep from anyone there. I was just wondering how the folks in Slidell made out.

Communication is impossible to Slidell. Flooding but not destroyed is what I heard.

The problem here is there are so many places, it is impossible to keep up. And comprehend.

Gov of LA is choking up. Saying it's heartbreaking. Said that they are in the "planning process" of getting people out of the city and superdome to another place.
