Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

"Between the casinos and Bourbaon street, maybe the storm had a moral purpose." - Stinkerpot

I'm not much of a Bible student, but didn't Jesus say something like "the Father lets the rain fall on the just and the unjust alike"? On the other hand (and this is possibly where stinkerpot is coming from) there is a tendency in the Old Testament to view natural or political disasters as divine punishment for the moral transgressions of Israel (or other groups). The latter way of thinking may seem archaic or offensive, but it is very hard to shake; even totally secular people like DUmmies start thinking that way on occasion. That's kind of how they viewed 9/11 - divine punishment for America's sins. And if we're honest, I think most of us sometimes see things in that way, even if only half-consciously.

"...nobody should be driving out of New Orleans with an empty seat in the car."

I'd agree with that, but you realize that whole neighborhoods or apartment complexes of people in N.O. have no cars. I guess they could have walked to the interstate and hitchhiked -- if anybody would pick them up. There's just no way to evacuate 1 million people (in and outside the city) in such a short amount of time.

These are concious decisions on my part, but in New Orleans and the surrouding areas, you see and will continue to see this type of decision beig made as a simple exhibition of human nature. Condemn this if you must, but do not expect it to change, not this century anyway.

It won't change as long as human nature and the will to survive remains. Obtaining true necessities during an emergency is not morally wrong, as long as attempts to make restitution are made afterwards. People who would let a diabetic die rather than "steal" insulin from a pharmacy have misguided priorities.

AccuWeather said last night another depression was forming in the Atlantic and the pressure from this storm as she departs could actually pull this new one in behind Katrina. Has anyone heard anything about this?

Parts of Illinois and Indiana are experiencing such a horrific drought this year that they likely welcome the rain - no matter how much they get.

Their crops were already ruined but this rain gives them a new start for next year.

The only problem is whether the ground is too dry to accept a lot of rain and whether most of it will run off into the creeks, lakes and rivers of the area.

OTOH, those bodies of water are at very low levels too.

It's a sincere offer.

I know it was, which is why I wanted to recognize you. You are a compassionate, caring person, and the world needs more like you.

Oh yes, besides food and water, of course medicinal supplies.

Look, by your collective posts, you think looting's fine. They're not taking food and water, they are hauling out the innards of entire stores.....it's not all food and water, blankets and medicine...it's looting.

Louisiana's wildlife department has a program to encourage people to catch and eat nutria, the critters are so overpopulated.

No, he doesn't. He's drawing a pretty clear distinction, and you're missing it. It's not worth arguing about.

Jefferson Co Parish councilmember now on wwtl....stating that Grand Isle is completely destroyed...1/3 structures gone, other 2/3 severe damage.

In addition, oil rigs and oil pipelines are severely damaged. Said that the pipelines are leaking.

I pledge my family will give tourist dollars to NO when they are back on their feet. Beignets and Hurricanes. A truly great city.

I am currently sitting on a booking into New Orleans for the second week of November. I'd love to be able to give them some tourist $$ as well, but it doesn't look good.

I'm not saying there aren't greedy wealthy people, or that all wealthy people are greedy, just that wealth makes it easy for you to seem nonchalant about money.

My mother lived in the A basin in Butte LaRose, inland from NO. If the Corp of Engineers had to flood the basin to save NO, she was offered extremely expensive flood insurane for a window of ninety days. I don't know about hurricanes, though.

I disagree. This is not a fact, it is your opinion, which you have every right to hold

Well, then, I guess government shouldn't even bother with disaster plans. Tell everyone that a storm is coming and don't take any extraordinary steps to expedite the traffic out of town. If someone is in a single-story nursing home, well, that's they're tough luck.
