Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

I'm kind of wondering about the D-Day Museum. I'm unfamiliar with New Orleans and have no clue where Magazine Street is, but it would seem to me a whole lot of WWII historical artifacts could have been lost in this thing...has anybody heard anything, or does anyone know if that's in a bad part of town?

I initially poo-poo'd thoughts that this was another Galveston....however, I am starting to rethink this.

From another board:

Per Fox...the lower half of Plaquemines Parish has been reclaimed by the Mississippi River...

Nobody can get in touch with anyone in that area.

I heard an interview with the Parish President on Saturday night and he said there was an estimated 20% who did not evacuate...and that means about 5000-6000 people stayed in Buras, Venice, Port Sulphur, et al...

--------------

If this is remotely accurate, then this may approach Galveston.

I totally agree with everyone saying that Fox News' coverage was abyssmal, at best, last night and yesterday. I found myself watching CNN for an extended period (something I would normally never do) and I surprised myself. Aaron Brown did a great job last night. I fear Fox News may have become cocky in light of high ratings and may have taken all of us for granted.

Imagine if they evacuated everyone from the New Orleans metropolitan area and it turned out not to be so catastrophic after all.

Do that every couple of years whenever a major storm approaches, and your city will be bankrupt and/or uninhabitable.

But if they had evacuated as many people as they could have, then they wouldn't be wasting this time going around looking for people.

You're right, but they are "wasting this time going around looking for people" because they aren't willing to do what they should have done. They should have told people several days ago that "anyone left in the city after daybreak on Monday is on their own and sh!t out of luck -- 'cause we're outta here and you ain't gonna be rescued!"

I heard that they were, then someone on the thread said there was no rioting. Any info?

I think the 1-hour boil instruction was from a broadcaster on the wwltv.com newcast that simply misspoke. She's been saying all day to boil for 1 minute, and I did hear her say 1-hour just a little while ago, but they were trying to get through some announcements quickly and no one bothered to correct her.

Fox refuses to wake up; so they deserve it.

They've gotten enough e-mails regarding their very poor coverage concerning news....for quite a while....I know of FReepers who have gotten nasty responses from them.

So, if they sink, they deserve it.

They had some clown on the radio here in Cal blaming this on the "Southern Decadence" festival that was this last weekend. This scumbag apparently thinks God goes around wiping out three states to get at a couple of thousand drunken coeds from Texas and Arkansas who were long gone by Sunday.

The surge part sounds almost exactly like Galveston... the flooding of NO is just 'bonus' misery. I know no one wants to speculate, but I think someone should start telling people that MANY more than ~80 people have died.

Boiling for an hour would suggest that you need some kind of still operation to recapture the steam. :)

Diamondhead is not really high ground...Mi'sipi' is flat as a pancake. My Dad's house is 50 ft above sea level and a few miles inland from Bay St.Louis

I am amazed the house has so little damage because it looked like the eye of Katrina went right over them!

WOW. It just seems to get worse.

I told my wife Sunday morning that if the city flooded, the Superdome was gonna get horrific, akin to Andy DuFrane crawling down that sewer pipe in Shawshank Redemption.

There is no power except for lights. Limited ventilation (from the holes in the roof, they are probably a blessing now). Limited water and food. And now a sewer line's worth of sh** has backed up into the facility, along with all the crap and urine that has been accumlating because the toilets stopped flushing when the power went out.

Like Red said, I can't imagine it, probably because I don't want to imagine it.

Add global warming to that list, too.

MSNBC snuck that one into a report this morning already.

What I don't understand is....if they KNOW that the sewer is flooding the Superdome, then why would they be transferring patients from hospitals there?

Or, does someone on this thread know if they changed their minds about using the Superdome for patients?

I am thinking maybe some ships from Galveston...the passenger cruise ships could go to that area, and they could maybe get boats or helicopters and transfer people to them, and take them to Florida or Texas....

Estimates on power outages in Hattiesburg according to the mayor are at least through the end of the week..perhaps into next week.

I just heard on the ABC radio news (about 15 minutes ago), that the Superdome is flooding through the sewer system...

Which means that everything that was in the sewer lines was pushed into the Superdome ahead of the floodwaters.

Oh my dear Lord!

Done. (arrggggggh).

Actually that was overhype. But I am surrounded by those who said similar things about 9/11. They got wackos in all directions, left, right, up, down, and moose-limb.

There are reports of 35-40 foot surge east of the center. The death toll might not reach Galveston levels, but the damage will be far worse over a larger area.
