Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Thanks! I was watching and an OKC commercial appeared so I knew they had the feed -- glad it is back.

I've actually weaned myself from FOX since the election. We won, I didn't need to see the constant drivel spewed there anymore. CNN isn't my favorite when it comes to reporting the war, etc... but, they have been proving their worth lately.

The weather coverage on FOX has always been terrible, their coverage of this storm could be the beginning of the end of their supremecy in Cable News.

I saw that report on FOX this morning. The guy was so broken when he talked about losing his wife. She told him to take care of the kids and grandkids and then it sounded like she was gone. God bless those poor souls.

My grandfather still hasn't heard from his nieces (my cousins) who are/were in a 7th floor apartment since yesterday morning. The three of them are older women, so I'm getting worried all over again.

"Because the time to figure that out and work out the logistics and legalities was twenty years ago."

True, and I hope my state of Texas will learn a few lessons as we are almost as much at risk as is La.

But even so, a simple idea like busing people out would have worked (Surely lots of buses in N.O.) as late as saturady maybe even Sunday am. Clearly NOBOBY in La, put any thought into the idea of evacuating the city. Guess the local govs attitude is every man (woman/child) for himself. Now the federal gov is stuck trying to evacuate 80,000 with no roads and no airports. Hope N.O. and La are happy with there elected officals.

Good morning. Just heard from my husband who has made it back to Mandeville. New Orleans is under Marshall Law. Homeland security is keeping the media from filming or reporting how bad it really is. (there are literally bodies floating in the street in New Orleans) They are trying to control the panic and pandemonium that would occur if broadcast to the nation. I think Mandeville and parts north faired well. Unfortunately, it does not sound like the same can be said for Slidell. Not sure when I will be returning. My husband will start adjusting claims as soon as they begin to come in. Of course, people are not reporting damage because they don't know what damage to claim. At least we know the insurance companies are on the ball. If anyone knows anything about Mandeville schools please post. Particularly Mandeville High School, Mandeville Junior High, and Ponchartrain Elementary. I will post anything I am able to find out through my husband."

Sorry, but it is going to take me a while to catch up.

Much more bad news...I see.

An excellent point about the contamination. The ramifications of this will go on for years.

Watching the videos and reading the posts, it sure makes whatever issues I'm having seem very small by comparison...

Local reporter says someone freaked out in superdome and leaped to their death.

Oh, lovely. That will improve morale in a basically dark, hot, stinky, filthy place.

I keep reading posts about what the mayor or gov. should have done,

The mayor sent his family out of NO before Saturday morning. He should be held accountable for not ordering an evacuation.

I think they need to find a way to get people out of the dome and moved to other facilities, perhaps schools out of town.
