Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

That was in response to someone asking if these people were Democrats or Repubicans. I think the whole thing was a misunderstanding.

I am talking about the folks that are downtown, or in the French Quarter, or in the higher areas near the levees running south of St Charles Street. Those folks need to be evacuated. They are trying to get folks to downtown that are trapped in attics and roof tops in the flood zone. Apparently 700 folks were picked up last night.

Unfortunately that's probably the case under these conditions. Guns will top Maslow's hierachy of needs, e.g., food, water, etc.

It is terrible -- local reporters know their city and what is happening. Water is continuing to rise all over the city and to the Superdome according to WWL just now. Cannot even fathom this from where I sit after visiting New Orleans in recent years so I cannot imagine what it would be like to see your city under water.

WONDERFUL NEWS!!!

My brother just heard from my Dad who is in Diamondhead, MS. Diamondhead is in Hancock county...about 20 miles east of Slidell and 20 miles west of Gulfport. They live inland from I10 near the water tower if anyone knows the area. They are fine and miraculously so is the house. There is just some minor shingle damage.

The call came from a neighbors cell phone so we should start hearing more very soon.

Praise God!

The LSU professors on WWL are now saying that the flood waters are headed for the Super Dome/Downtown area.

"Never attribute an evil motive when simple incompetence will suffice as an explanation"---heard that once and it helps me stay sane.

That's one we should all remember. If I kept that in mind, it might improve my blood pressure.

Last I heard, the water outside the Superdome was about 3 feet deep. This was a couple of hours ago though.

My love fest with Fox ended about 2 yrs ago. The fact they turned the lights out before midnight last night during this catastrophic event and MSNBC followed doing the same airing repeat programming was the final straw for me.

I can't stand CNN. But they were on LIVE all night long. I have to show them respect for that decision.

If this had happened in NYC or Los Angeles they would have been on 24-7. But they turned off the lights when it was already dark.

Disgraceful.
