Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

If she's in Tammanary (sp?) Parish, she won't be allowed in. There was an update upthread that police were keeping everyone out of that Parish.

Can't folks retreat to the Mississippi River levees (the highest thing around), and be picked up by boat?

"I saw that same family! and I saw an update. They all survived--the little girl actually slept through most of it. Those shrimp boats are built like a tank. The woman said the boat rocked a bit, but no major damage. When I saw them before the storm, I assumed they would be dead by the end. Good news in the midst of so much bad."

I didn't realize it was a shrimp boat, even though I still would have worried since I had no idea they were so sturdy until you told me. Again, thanks so much for the good news! Now I don't have to wonder about what became of that family. Now to continue to pray for the thousands of others. Unbelievable, huh?

I gave her a crash course in hurricanes on Sunday! Needless to say, she didn't believe she'd need all the stuff I made her get.......LOL.

This is now a Okalahoma station leading me to believe the Jackson station may have been knocked offline.

I was elated yesterday, today I am in shock at what is happening to NO and Mississippi. I heard Grand Isle is no more, just gone, part of the GOM. I used to go fishing down there, have friends with summer homes down there.

This time yesterday the general concensus was New Orleans dodged a bullet. Man have things changed in 24 hours. I just read 80% of the city is flooded and there is wide spread looting.

Hopefully she DID get the stuff you told her she'd need. She's had a good attitude through it all.

WDSU stream is currently down; somehow it is getting an Oklahoma (Channel 5) TV station now.

Switching to WWL-TV.

I visited Vicksburg back in '97. A fine-looking city...except for a few certain parts.

Hope there wasn't too much damage to the historical buildings and battlefield sites.

I heard that the Super Dome also was surrounded by water, guess it must not be too deep if they're bringing people in.

Back to what dirtboy said about being an amateur, what I never understand is that if WE, sitting here at our keyboards days in advance, can figure some of this stuff out, why in the world can't the people who are PAID to figure this stuff out can't figure it out.

I mean, what is happening is almost exactly what was discussed on these threads from Thursday on.

I'm thinking we need to for a consulting company.

I know someone who has relatives in the northern part of Diamondhead at one of the highest places there. They managed to use a landline phone to get a message out yesterday that their trees and fences were down, power was out, and they were living in a war zone but with a half-full pool were getting by.

.

The water coming up in the city is full of oil, chemicals, sewage, snakes, rats and fire ants. It'll take boats working the flooded streets to get folks to the levees.
