I've been noticing a GREAT increase in Troll activity here on FR in the past several days. I wonder why? Maybe they're bored. Who knows. Ah well...it's always fun to take part in a good ZOT. :-)

thanks .. I've been worried sick about EVERYONE down there, but very close friends live in NO, and it took till SUnday morning for two life-long Orleanian husbands to decide to evacuate for the first time in their lives. Am praying they and their families are safely tucked away someplace in Tx. Don't even want to think about what they will return to, but if their lives are spared, that's what's important.

... do not appear to be from Lake Ponchatrain, but rather from the south-east and the Mississippi. Have a look at the satelite photos from Google Maps at this link: Zoomed in. Now, zoom out, and look at what is right next door.

They just stated on FoxNews that it is a floatel, a floating dormatory for the oil workers and that it had been washed away from the shipyard where it had just been constructed. While it can be towed by just one tugboat, they are sending several of them to pull it away from the bridge.

I've been on the road today so I've not had a chance to view much of the pictures coming out of the area via television. But let me say that I'm in Southeast Texas and there are many evacuees in this area. The radio reports as I passed through Houston mentioned that some 55,000 hotel rooms were occupied by evacuees in that area. Businesses and others are banning together to help as much as possible to make their stay tolerable. Example, they are giving free tickets to those for many things such of the sightseeing nature so they can maybe take their minds off the problems for a few hours. There are some 2,000 in our area at a County facility and many more in other locations.

What has slowly begun to sink in to me in the short time I've been home is the destruction to the infrastructure along the Gulf Coast from the Baton Rouge area in the Panhandle of Florida. I-10 and US Hwy 90 have complete sections of the roadways gone. I'm sure railways are the same. That probably means months before repairs can be completed.

No telling the damage to the infrastructure within the cities that are still inundated. Utilities, water systems, sewerage facilities, etc.

I know this sounds pessimistic but I believe it to be reality at the moment. The bottom line is that we need to give thanks for the minimal loss of life and pray for God's blessings as the resumption of the lives of those impacted is begun. Keep your hope and chin up.

what a wonderful response from Houston !!!! I know a few who went there, others to San Antonio, Dallas, etc. Amazing how Americans who often become somewhat provincial really come across when the going gets rough ... and I hope everyone remembers the very first replacement fire truck sent to NYC after 9/11 came from the people of Louisiana.

I was born and raised in LA and it has been my experience that the people there are very resourceful and will respond in kind. They will begin the rebuilding process and I'm sure they will be extremely successful.

There are many resources poised along the way to begin moving towards that area as soon as it's possible to get them into the areas. I saw rescue groups, utility groups, etc. massing and will begin the trek into LA, MS, AL.

Thanks Howlin for this thread. I have a very large family in Louisiana and we've been receiving calls from them on an intermittent basis. Mr. OBL and I were on vacation when this struck and have intermittent use of the Internet.

No one's heard from my cousin, a NOLA fireman after they were ordered to evacuate.

Prayers for all of those enduring the aftermath of this devastating hurricane.

This is the nightmare scenario people knew would one day strike at the heart of Louisiana and the gulf coast. Will be checking in later.

While driving back from Indianapolis today saw red cross emergency vehicles heading south...I'd say help is coming in from the mountains and the prairies, and everywhere else in between....It's the American way!

Very true. I think you'll see this country ban together again much like it did after 9/11..... The loss of life isn't is large, thank God, but the devastion to a culture and people are still as bad, imo.

Yes Americans will come to the aid and rescue of their fellow humans.
